I absolutely loved the art style of this book. The color palette and the delicate lines created such a strong mood. If you’re a person who has ever watched someone be in a relationship with a manipulative/toxic person, this is a tough and stressful read.
I think it’s important to show those kinds of relationships as a warning, but I also wish that the decision to break up with Laura Dean came from within Freddy instead of from an adult woman on the internet. The ending tied up a bit too nicely for me, but I did feel strongly for Freddy and was relieved that she was out of that situation.

the only reason this isn't getting 5 stars from me is because the subject matter isn't really something I would revisit again and again (aka teenage romance woes)

that said, this is an excellent Mariko Tamaki book and a gorgeous graphic novel. you really feel the emotions bleeding through the panels almost effortlessly (I'd love to see an author's manuscript copy of this).

definitely not as metatextual and reference-heavy as Fun Home, but should be up there in standalone graphic novels. well-deserving of its Eisner awards for sure.

31/07/22 - Didn’t enjoy this as much the second time. The story just didn’t connect with me so much. The art is stunning as ever though.

Freddy is dating the most popular girl in school, who keeps breaking up with her or otherwise ditching her. While seating advice from an internet advice columnist she emailed, Freddy navigates the complexities of balancing this relationship with her existing friendships. I thought this book was well written, and the story was compelling. Freddy's situation is similar to one many people find themselves in. Throughout, and especially at the end, emotions are handled really beautifully and honestly, and various advice throughout is solid and not preachy. I also adored the art style, especially when it came to backgrounds and plants.
I would have given this a 5 star review, but throughout most of the book there are strong themes of anti-polyamory, which is slightly remedied by one character making a more polly-friendly comment but overall it seemed like a lot of negative messaging on that topic.
