I love being surprised by a book like I was with Darkness Becomes Her by Kelly Keaton. I didn't know anything about the book before picking it up and I thought I'd just go along for the ride and enjoy the story. At times, it feels like Darkness Becomes Her could have become too much, with so much going on and new elements added to an already bizarre new world, but for me, it worked. I was able to believe in each new twist to the story and I really had a great time discovering a different world with a new mythology.
Ari has always stuck out. Her hair and her eyes stand out and she doesn't fit in. She's lived her entire life in foster care and her life has been anything but easy. Now finally she's with a good family and she's kind of kick-ass in the family business, but when she finds out new information about her mother, Ari gets inadvertently sucked into a different life.
In Darkness Becomes Her, Kelly Keaton introduces us to a very different version of New Orleans. Many years ago, New Orleans was wiped out by several very severe hurricanes that made the city unliveable and most of the residents fled. In their place sweep in the Novem who begin to rebuild. What Ari comes to find out is that this new city, dubbed New 2 is now populated by 'different' people just like her - people who are part vampire or witch or shape-shifters. And for some reason, New 2's top families are interested in Ari. What lies behind Ari's strange hair and eyes? Why did Ari's mother commit suicide and leave Ari? Why are mysterious men keen on killing her?
This book is quite fast-paced and chock full of mystery and intrigue. There's action and romance and enough twists and turns to make it really exciting. We meet some really wonderful secondary characters and I think it's a great start to what looks like a fun new series. I especially love New Orleans as a setting, there's enough there of the different districts and atmospheres to really stand out in my mind. I can't wait to see where Kelly Keaton takes this story next!

This was a pretty good read, it was interesting and well paced keeping readers interested all the way through. But despite all of this I just didn't feel as though I wasn't really gripped by the book.
The main character is Ari, a girl alone in the world who decides as a way to go back to her roots to look into the death of her mother. This leads her to a strange place New 2, New Orleans after it has been rebuilt, she ends up with a gang of unwanted youths. And she learns more about the city and it's inhabitants including some of the greek gods/ goddesses. My only issue with this character is that I felt she was a bit of a rip off of other female characters in the YA genre, including Rose Hathaway from VA, Annabeth from Percy Jackson.
There are a lot of secondary characters but I am going to wait until I read the other books in the series before I comment on them.
The storyline was good but it wasn't the most original. The pacing was good and I enjoyed the cliffhanger ending. But something about this book left something to be desired for me and I'm not sure what it was.
3 stars, I may continue with the rest of the series after a little while and then I may need to reread this book to catch myself up.
3 stars, an OK read

It definitely got me interested, but it seemed like it took a while to figure out what exactly was happening. I do want to read the next book though!

I really liked this book, although I was a bit hesitant about it at first. I found the relationship between her and Sebastian a bit quick but it was soon put on hold for the rest of the book, so I wished that could have been fleshed out a bit. In addition, I thought there was a lot of cussing for a teen book and I kind of had the impression that the author put in the cussing just to have it there and not for any real purpose (such as character really stressed or fighting for her life and creating really cool pun to fight the bad guy). Other than these minor things, I gave the book 5 stars because it was a really interesting concept and you don't find out until the end what Ari really was, which was refreshing for a change. I liked how the book ended as well, a search for knowledge, and I can't wait until the sequel comes out.
Didn't love it, didn't hate it, glad I didn't pay for it. This book took way too long to get to the action, and I don't understand what suddenly made MC & her love interest fall for each other. You'd think in a book about Medusa & her ancestors that physical attraction wouldn't be the main thing driving the pathetic, unnecessary romance.
Not sure if I'll read the second book, but I checked it out of the library at the same time as this one, so who knows.

Was an amazing story... til the end. Hate when books end on a cliff hanger. I just spent hours reading your book, would love some sort of resolve. And, no, I don't want to wait for the next book to get the rest of the story.
Paranormal? Check. Mythology? Check. What more does a girl need?!
Desperate to find out about her birth mother, Ari heads to New 2, the storm ravaged New Orleans that the US has abandoned. New 2 was bought by, the Novem, nine powerful/rich families who all have their little secrets: three families are witches, three families are vampires, and three families are shifters. New 2 is now known for it's paranormal aspects and "unusual" residents. Once in New 2, Ari gets help from Sebastian and they fall in love. Instantly...
I enjoyed the characters and it was kind of fun to see characters from mythology running around the city and interacting with others - and it was nice that they stayed true to their mythological personalities. Ari was definitely a strong character, even if she did have her moments where I needed to smack her upside the head. I did like the Sebastian as well, but neither of them really portrayed themselves as the insta-love type when we first meet them. Sebastian acts like he wants nothing to do with her when they meet and then the next day he's showing her around New 2 and they're making out left and right. I would have much preferred - as I usually do - the slow budding romance.
One of the things I didn't like about the book is that there was a lot going on (paranormal, mythology, finding her parents/the truth), and it all felt pretty rushed. Nothing major happens for the first few chapters and the plot is slowly getting into the nitty gritty andthenallofasuddenthingsstarthappeningandOMGwhat'sgoingon? It was very interesting to read, but I felt like I had to re-read previous pages/passages to find out what exactly was going on and how we got there. At the same time, Keaton is amazing at describing scenes and using such vivid imagery, that I felt like I was in New 2. I could picture scenes and characters very clearly and definitely felt immersed in the world.
Overall, it was a very interesting story and definitely a new take on paranormal/mythology. At the same time, it wasn't the book for me - which is weird as I'm all about the two subjects and you would think with a combination of them I'd be in Heaven. However, I do not want you to not read this book because I wasn't a huge fan. It was enjoyable and I can see the appeal, so I definitely think it is worth you giving Darkness Becomes Her a read. Not to mention, most of my friends feel completely opposite about this novel than I do - I'm a lone shark in this one. *duh duh duh duh*
