3.5 stars. This was a great start to a new YA series by Kelly Keaton (aka Kelly Gay of the Charlie Madigan series). Foster child Ari travels to Louisiana to find out about her mother, and learns much more of her past than she ever dreamed. She's a likable heroine, and this story has a very interesting premise. I'll definitely continue with this series!

So I really loved this book! I absolutely loved the idea of New 2. New 2 was created after New Orleans was completely wiped away from hurricane Katrina. Rumors say that everyone who lives there today has supernatural powers of some sort. Vampire, witches, seers, shape shifters, even Gods. It's the story of 17-year-old, foster child Ari. While searching for her birth mother Ari stumbles upon her family's curse: At the age of 21 every girl from Ari's family goes insane, and by that time the girl will have already had a child (now, this isn't like the exact way they write curse, but you get the gist.) Ari learns her mother had also succumbed to the curse years before, so now her only hope is to travel into New 2, her birth place, and find out who her father is. Ari ends up getting some help from a group of 6 gifted children. Sebastian, the oldest of the group with mind persuasion abilities as well as being an empath, is actually also a child of one of the 9 families that bought and control New 2, the Novum. He also is the one to help Ari the most and then 2 of them start making out like 3 chapters in. Any way, the group also consisted of Crank (3rd oldest), the non gifted one who can fix anything, Henri of unknown powers (2nd oldest), Dub, the one with the gift of fire, and violet. She's like a vampire who doesn't drink blood, but her fangs are awesome. I don't know what her power is. Back to the story: So Ari ends up find out more about the curse, but not how to break it, and she also finds out who her father is AND gets to meet him (not in that order though). So, i will leave you with that vague ending of the summary, because I don't want to spoil some very cool and twisted surprises.

Read it!!! :)

Ari was raised in foster care, and at the age of 17 she goes back to where it all started. Seeking to find answers about her parents she talks to one of the staff at a psych ward. The Dr there tells her that at age four her mother left her with social services, and admitted herself into Rocquemore. She was there for six months, and committed suicide the night before her twenty first birthday. Hoping to find a birth certificate that will lead her to her father she travels to New 2. After the hurricanes destroyed New Orleans several families pooled their money together and bought the once thriving city and made it their own. Some speculate it is the home of all things supernatural. She hasn't ever been across the rim, and is not prepared for the things she will meet. Keaton created a world with vampires, witches, and shapeshifters. They may not always agree, but New 2 is a safe haven for anyone who is different. Very interesting book, and I look forward to more action now that the world building is complete.

This book was so refreshing. It has a post-apocalyptic setting and it includes our real history surrounding the hurricane that struck New Orleans. The characters are like none I have seen in the books I have read in the past 2 years. Kelly Keaton is brilliant in her usage of descriptive writing. She makes you feel as though you are right there on the French Quarter. I cannot wait to read the next book.

Having said that, while I read for my own pleasure, I also read so that I can recommend books for my students to read. This book has very strong language. I do not understand why Keaton felt she had to use the "f" word and "g d" throughout the book. It would have been wonderful on its own merit. Because of the language, I cannot recommend this book to my students, but if you are an adult, and you can look past the language, you won't regret reading it.

DARKNESS BECOMES HER is a fresh new read filled with Mythology, action and mystery mixed with the paranormal. It started out with a girl who didn't know who or what she was and ended with a girl with a family history and future I could never have guessed would be revealed. The pacing of the book is fantastic, it moves and flows in and out of situations that leaves you wanting to read what comes next. I loved the setting. Post Hurricane disaster New Orleans is a place all its own, owned privately after the government washed its hands of it and now filled with magic, mystery and unpredictable situations. Ari is defiantly a young heroine to keep your eyes on.
