Apparently James Cameron hates this book.

First, he ruins the ability to even think we could raise the Titanic by going to it and showing it's in multiple pieces.

Then he ruins the whole idea of some unobtainable mineral with that unobtanium bullshit in Avatar.

I get it, it's an easy book to hate, but coming out of the first two published Dirk Pitt books, this is almost a breath of fresh air with its only slightly over the top sexism. I mean, at least it doesn't have Dirk raping a woman, after slapping her, when we first meet him or have the rampant homophobia of Dirk pretending to be the most stereotypical hetero idea of what a gay man is like.

Has some good action. Dirk does stuff that could only be done through the power of plot. But I don't think I came here for the realism.

At least reading this one hasn't turned me off Dirk Pitt books for the next couple years.

Sexist treatment of women, rape jokes.

Anything about the Titanic is going to get my attention, so I eagerly bought this paperback while traveling. And I love alternative history stories, so that was also appealing. The book was written before the actual Titanic wreck was found, so it was conceivable that the ship could have been raised as described in the novel...but not entirely believable. The concept was more intriguing than was the actual story.

The history, feau as it might be, is what saved this book from 1 star. The language is unintelligent, the story is uncompelling save the exchanges between one of the characters and his wife is embarrassing, even when you consider it was written 40 years ago. The misogyny and the jingoistic aspects feel so dated and out of touch.

I should have probably done my research before trying to read this.

You see, i am doing reasearch for my own novel based on the decks of the doomed liner. This book came up in my googling, so i bought it. However, what i didn't know was this was published in 1980. Five years before the Titanic's wreck was discovered.

There was also a lot of creative liscence taken with this story (or i hope, otherwise Cussler should have really done his reasearch more furrowly) , so that makes it practically useless for research purposes.

However what really killed this story for me was the dialogue. The characters talk like writers writing a scene, i find it very unbelievable that people would actually say some of these things in general conversation. They just killed it for me.

Al Giordino makes his appearance in this book and seems a bit slow on the uptake ;) Good to see that he gets smarter in the later books. The writing is still a tad on the non-PC side but is better than the first few books in the series. Dirk Pitt's character is slowly getting more honed.

One has to suspend one's belief to enjoy these kind of books. I did, because I needed to read something uncomplicated.

Raise the Titanic! by Clive Cussler
Book starts out in 1900's and it's the night of the sinking Titanic where a man aboard knows the ship hit the iceberg and will sink as he goes to where he's stored the element that was mined that will be needed for future war projects.
Story follows a lot of different groups: one who finds the horn-the horn that was played on the Titantic, Sicilian project, money paid to survivors from miners who died in the past, other private groups that are funded from the government, the President who pursuades others to do things they don't really want to do and a lot more in different countries.
There is so much action and adventure, never mind the mystery surrounding it all. Bit of romance and you have a well rounded book for everybody.
Byzantium is the special mineral that everybody wants a piece of. two month submersible that can stay under water for more than 2 months time might just be the answer they need to get the minerals.
Thing that amazes me is that this book was written before they even located the Titanic so this is quite the story about it all.
Just when things are on an even keel a hurricane is in the area...
I received this book from National Library Service for my BARD (Braille Audio Reading Device).
