Another easy read. I enjoy the flawed characters and messy beginning 10 years prior. It seems realistic to me in that way, ten years isn’t actually that long of time and you don’t really forget people that easily, I can see them both falling for each other and it being all “wrong place wrong time” and then giving them time to grow and change completely, even if they thought it was for the worse!

I suppose Carley Fortune is the queen of second chance, dual time line romances. This was well paced, had great and complex characters, and I enjoyed the easy, fun read. The premise was a bit basic, but as the third Fortune book I've read I knew what to expect and this delivered. However, I wonder if she isn't Ali Hazelwooding herself and needs to write something a little....different? Buy id recommend this as a light read and am intrigued by it becoming a series/movie.
Also, why is a parent always dead? The last five romances I've read have had a recent parental death...can we not find love in joy, instead of grief?

there are times when i actually feel for the heroine. i can relate to her so much i can't help but sob. but the overall story really... it's not what i approve as a woman. i think the heroine can do so much better. so yeah.

Business school grad and music snob Fern and aspiring artist Will meet in Toronto and spend an amazing day together, establishing an incredibly deep connection. They promise to meet each other a year later at Fern's family's lake resort - and Will never shows up. Nine years later, after Fern's mother dies in an accident and Fern is picking up the pieces of her life and figuring out how to run the resort, Will returns - and he's nothing like the guy Fern met nine years earlier - and Fern wants to be angry with Will, but she's been thinking of him for nine years, against her better judgement.
Written in flashbacks between the present day and nine years earlier, with some of Fern's mom's journal entries added for drama and context, this surprisingly tender tale of second chances, forgiveness, unexpected pregnancies, and figuring out what you really want out of life - and being okay with that changing as you go through life - is a heartfelt read. I did appreciate the theme both characters had of growing up to be someone different than your parents expected you to be, as well as one of the characters' evolution of that to figuring out whether those feelings were something that still held to be true a decade later. I liked how parenthood, in its many forms, was evaluated and assessed from different angles, as well as the impact of parental relationships on children who are teens and young adults.
I would recommend reading it to anyone who likes Emily Henry, Annabel Monaghan, or any of Carley Fortune's other books.
Spice: two chilis.
