You Look Like a Thing and I Love You is a hilarious and insightful view into artificial intelligence and the challenges in reaching the highly-autonomous future that science fiction has promised us. It balances introducing technical concepts at a high level that most laypeople will understand, while still digging into the underlying concepts (eg, Markov chains etc.) that people with more familiarity with computer science concepts will appreciate.

Written in 2019, it is starting to feel dated; doubly so after the explosion in interest that ChatGPT has caused last fall. A great example is that GPT-2 was the latest iteration from OpenAI mentioned in the book, while ChatGPT is either based on GPT-3.5 (free version) or GPT-4 (paid).
