A really enjoyable and accessible overview of AI right now, illustrating the strengths and the limitations of current approaches and how they affect our lives. She also does a nice job talking about inherent biases, how they get transmitted in AI, and why they are so important to take into account. As a follow-up for more depth, I highly recommend Melanie Mitchell's "Artificial Intelligence: A Guide for Thinking Humans" https://www.goodreads.com/book/show/44368173

Really good narration! The robot voice for the AI readouts was fun.

IN SHORT: What the media calls "Artificial Intelligence" is anything but. We are nowhere near such an accomplishment. But our feeble attempts are not without some surprises and entertainment.

If you are mildly interested in "A.I." and want to know a little bit about the current state (and problems) of "smart" computers/programs/robots, this wouldn't be a bad book to start with. It's pretty much layperson level, and has some mild humor as well.

VERDICT: 2.33 stars for me, but probably deserves 3+. Repetitive and not as deep as I'd hoped. But the tales of so-called "intelligent" programs/robots doing stupid things--or, more precisely, "solving" tasks in odd ways due to inadequate programming by humans--made this read worthwhile.

P.S. Amazon Alexa is NOT artificial intelligence (please ignore all advertisements; they lie). Also: do not volunteer to ride in a self-driving vehicle any time soon.

DID NOT FINISH

DNF at 37%. Felt too much like a textbook and more of a surface explanation of things than I wanted. That may have been the intention of the book, so I'm not going to fault it for that, but I was hoping for something with both more humor and more information I didn't already know.
