While this is the 2nd of a 2 part series, its really, to me, the 5th of a 5 part series. The first being the hand of Thrawn series, then these. I think its amazing how in depth a world Timothy Zahn has layered over the original Star Wars epic. I think all of these Thrawn books would have made a much better new trilogy, but since they're all based on events after Jedi, maybe they still will be. Anyway, they are a fun read, and I think Zahn tries to capture the spirit of each character, and succeeds pretty well at it. Also, I liked the idea presented particularly in this series that the empire could have been not just some simple evil empire who is evil for evil's sake, but an effort to unite people from different regions and walks of life (who happens to have some bad seeds in its leadership). I think that's kind of a more realistic approach and gives a new dynamic to the good vs bad idea.
After reading six Tim Zahn-Star Wars books, I feel like I've been beaten up by Sugar Ray Leonard. No mas. I'm done.

Reading this was a slog. There were way too many plot lines that didn’t go anywhere. Bits of it were interesting, mostly involving Luke and Mara. It would have benefitted significantly from focusing in on a few plot threads.
I feel like the big revelations didn’t hit because the buildup was so muddled. It wasn’t interesting to watch characters find out the Thrawn was a fake because we already knew, and the reveal at the end don’t even amount to much anyway. Also the fruition of Luke and Mara’s partnership into a relationship didn’t feel earned.

At first I was unsure if it was worth 5 stars. By the end I knew for a fact. Zahn easily managed the multiple storylines that are strung throughout this book. Bringing them all into an exciting climax a galaxy wide. I will definitely have to finish off the other few legends books still out there by Zahn but one thing is for sure; A good friend of mine told me that if we were to forget the novels that come after this, the signing of the treaty between New Republic and Imperial Remnant is the perfect place for the an "end" to the Star Wars universe that we of course hope will never actually end and he is definitely correct in that assessment.
