I started reading this book, but immediately put it down after only a few pages. The writing drew me in so quickly that I knew I wanted to binge read it. I could not just put it down after reading for 30 minutes before bed. I brought it on vacation and read in about two long sittings.

I was completely charmed by Lady Emily. She is slightly unsure of herself, but building her self confidence by learning to live on her own terms within the strict society that she was raised in. I look forward to continuing the series and seeing the mysteries that Lady Emily finds herself in and new ways she breaks with her society's expectations.

so, even though anyone who has ever read a mystery could probably see the denouement coming for ages, i really liked this series and look forward to reading the others. in oh, so many ways it reminded me of the first deanna raybourne book. hopefully the ensuing series won't progressively suck more and more, like those. and maybe this book came first anyway - i'm too lazy to check right now.

4.5 stars. Really enjoyed this mystery - I would recommend it to fans of the Amelia Peabody or Julia Grey series. It kept me guessing as to the bad guy(s), and I liked Emily as a character.

It was entertaining. Sadly, this entertainment didn't last until the end of the book.
I was charmed with the idea of the heroine falling in love with her already-dead husband. I found her personality a little hard to fit into a Victorian setting, but like to think that there could have been some women like her.

This heroine is SO. DUMB. No one else in this book is that great either.

This book was a wonderful surprise to me this year! With nothing to read I picked it up at a used book store for a dollar and found that I had discovered a missing Austen novel. Tasha Alexander brought to life the world of the Victorian era in such a lively, mysterious and animated way that all you want to do is read it. When you are forced to put it down all you want to do is pick it up again.

Her protagonist Lady Emily Ashton is very modern for her time, but still with that air of respectability that conforms easily into nineteenth century society. She speaks her mind and thinks outside of the respectable lady box but still has enough classic english charm to win over the hearts of men and women alike. The story that she was thrown into-- one of intrigue, mystery and theft, is compelling, exciting, crazy and fun. Nothing at all that our new "Austen classified" heroine can't handle.

As a debut novel this could not get any better. The authoress wins you over with her style of writing, her way of thinking and of course with this brilliant story that she has concocted. She has won me over to her side and I eagerly look forward to reading all of her future writing pieces. 5/5

Recomendado.

One of those books that you can't put down and you just want to read forever!! I loved this book, but it's hard to explain why! It just has that extra "something" that makes you hate to stop reading it.

Meh. I grabbed this book off of the "Recommended" shelf at the library because nothing I had requested was ready yet, so I didn't expect a whole lot. I usually like historical fiction, but this one was pretty dull.

Review to come.
