I wanted this to be more than it was. Maybe I wanted it to be adult fiction. Maybe I didn't want it to be romance. Maybe I just didn't need to read a white person starting to understand how to see color. It was pretty. It was snow-covered. It was soft. It took an hour and a half to read and that was enough.
4.5 Stars.
Wow. What a story and what a time for me to read for the first time in. 2020, where we still deal with similar situations, pain, weird looks, etc.
Not much to say right now, but if you are questioning reading this.... you should.

Wow, that just gave me a whole different perspective on Black Lives Matter.
First of all, I almost cried at the end and I NEVER cry with books or movies. It was just so heartbreaking and, yes, you already go into this book knowing what might happen at the end, but until it happens you won’t exactly know how it happens.
I get it. The author wanted to prove a point. But why? And then again I am thankful for this brutality because it only represents our reality.
Jaqueline Woodson describes her story as a retelling of Romeo and Juliet. The conflict here is shown by the difference of the skin colour. Ellie is white and Jewish, Miah is black. And they are madly in love.
I think they were a bit too mature to be only 15 years old, but it made it even more devastating.
Even though this story is already over 20 years old, it is as important today as it was back then.
I wish I could say that society has changed in that time, but sadly this is not the case. More people need to read this book to actually feel how it is to live between two worlds.

This book had such a sad ending but the details were amazing and overall I loved this book.
This story will forever change the way I view the world. It brings tears to my eyes just thinking about the ending.

Maybe I’ll update this later. Literally just finished listening to the book and my chest is too full.
Another reviewer said it was abrupt and heartbreaking and that may just be enough.
Of note, is I did appreciate the writing and almost a softness or airiness of the audiobook.

It hurt. I knew what it was about. I knew what would happen. And it still hurt.
I agree the ending seemed sudden but so was well...I can’t say cause spoilers.
It was cute. It felt like a dream. How did such a short book make me cry?!?
