I had tried reading this a long time ago at the height of zombie media relevancy. I was a big fan of the Resident Evil games in the 90s and then the movies as those started coming out, The Night of the Living Dead (both the original and the 1990 remake), The Walking Dead, etc. I remember next to nothing of my thoughts back then besides I found it boring and never finished it. This time, I found it surprisingly good! Obviously very well thought-out and researched (so much so that I guess some people thought it was not fiction?). There’s a lot of advice in it that (minus the zombies, naturally) would be applicable to survival in some sort of catastrophe today. I think good ol’ fashioned zombies deserve a comeback in the literature world.
Not as good as World War Z, sadly. Creative and comprehensive, but the pages and pages of lists get a little monotonous after a while. Unlike, say, the humorous , Brooks maintains a completely deadpan tone throughout. This seriousness serves him very well in World War Z, where it helps make the story more authentic. However, in this book, there is no story. As a result, the dry tone makes for rather dull reading. Still decent, but not really compelling.
My love for all things zombie is no secret, but I even surprised myself with how quickly and easily I read through this book. :) Fascinating. I love looking at "what if" scenarios and knowing the best possible, logical, and scientific way to handle them. I love Max Brooks' style of writing and now I'm off to tackle World War Z!
As someone who loves zombie stories, this book was an interesting twist. Reading like a how-to guide crossed with an apocalypse-prepper's to-do list, this is a must-read for anyone super into zombie/apocalypse stories.
Clever and possibly the most useful nonfiction book ever

All of our weird questions, imagined scenarios, and late-night thoughts about zombie survival compiled.
Just too creepy for me to actually find it funny. Otherwise very well written.
This was not great. Most of the book was just lists of what vehicles, weapons, etc. that would be good for a zombie apocalypse and arguments for/against each one. I was expecting this, but it just started to feel tedious way too quickly. The last part of the book was about zombie attacks and was much more entertaining than the rest of the book. I would not recommend this unless, like me, you need a book that starts Z for an alphabet challenge.
