I loved this book. It made me uncomfortable with just about everything, but most especially about how black people have been treated and are still treated in the health care system in the United States. The book explains our history and gives many practical solutions.

My podcast partner and I read this for an upcoming episode on Madness Cafe Podcast.

Everyone who has any role in or related to healthcare needs to read this book. I especially recommend it to white folks who are interested in dismantling racism and addressing racial health inequities.

While I don't work in healthcare or politics, I am a lifelong patient with a chronic illness. This book was extremely eye-opening and astonishing as someone constantly in these spaces and impacted by healthcare at large.

I learned so much about the Black healthcare crisis and the history of how healthcare has actively harmed non white communities over the decades and still to this day. I am so appreciative to Dr. Blackstock for sharing her personal healthcare stories and her experiences navigating healthcare spaces as a Black doctor. She created an excellent balance by using personal accounts and historical information to communicate her messages. I will be thinking about this book for a long time.

Everyone (especially non-Black people working in public health/healthcare) should read this book. Dr. Blackstock has an incredible story, and shares essential information on anti-Black race bias in healthcare (and the world.) I loved reading about her mom and sister and the legacy of Black women in healthcare.

There is a lot of work to do in regards to making our society and healthcare system equitable, and especially if you are not Black or a POC, this is a book where you can to begin to learn about the injustices that you may be ignorant to or have never experienced.
