A heartfelt, often depressing audiobook about the state of medicine and racism. It took a moment for me to get used to her voice because she gets emotional when reading, but once I settled in I couldn't imagine how anyone else could read it, the book is much too personal. The sections on her mother are a loving portrait of a resilient and industrious woman. It offered excellent insight into hospital/medical school bureaucracy and I learned some historical context of why black patients were hesitant to seek medical treatment. Many of the stats were depressing but unsurprising regarding black mortality rates and medical education. I kept thinking about the current political climate while listening and how issues like racial equity will largely fall on deaf ears for the near future, and for that reason it was hard to keep going after a while. I would recommend this book, but it is not going to make you feel like there is much to hope for (to be more fair, I think there is hope other liberals read the book and make incremental changes to their medical practice or studies).
