This is a must-read for anyone who uses healthcare in the U.S. (Which is… all of us.) I found this book powerful and thought-provoking. “Enjoyed” might not be the right word—because it stirs a full range of emotions: disappointment, anger, hope, and a call to action.
I was already aware of the persistent issues of systemic racism in healthcare, but this book deepened my understanding. It’s disheartening to see that even the most respected institutions often fail to live up to their mission of caring for all.
As an E.D. nurse and paramedic, I firmly believe you cannot truly serve others unless you are willing to learn about those who are different from you—and meet them where they are, not where you think they should be.
My only complaint? The book is too short! I would have gladly read three volumes—one diving deeper into each part of Dr. Blackstock’s life and the complex challenges she explores. Her insights are invaluable, and her writing is incredibly engaging. I finished the book wanting more.
Thank you, Dr. Blackstock, for writing this important work!

Informative and heartfelt.
Being an ally means more than reblogging an article or liking a post. Just like love being a verb so is being an anti-racist.
The US medical system will always be far behind other countries even though we spend billions of dollars on healthcare every year because our systems are designed in a way to oppress non-white patients/doctors/students. The medical and university boards are still mostly old white men with deeply rooted racist beliefs that do not want to upset the status quo and thereby undermine inclusivity and diversity progress.
