The story was not what I expected. It was like Mean Girls meets Riverdale meets The Craft. It lagged in some places, but still kept my interest. There was a little bit of predictability and some twists and turns I didn't see coming. It was worth a read, but I wish it had been a little more dark, exciting, and witchcraft fueled.

You should probably just read The Secret History instead...

This was such an incredible ride right through to the bloody, brutal end and I am FLOORED by how wonderfully dark and the lengths it went to. This is the book I will forever picture when I see the words Dark Academia, and future books have a lot to live up to.

There were times when the story felt slower, but instead of dragging it just became more atmospheric, using the time to bond Felicity and Ellis closer over dim candlelight, unfinished essays, stories of murdered girls and the disappearance of Felicity's ex girlfriend, Alex, who still haunts her.

I trusted correctly that the story was leading me down a path I wouldn't be able to predict, and I as I started to realise that Ellis seemed to be leading Felicity to terrible decisions, the more I started to question her intentions. Both Felicity and Ellis are unpredictable, morally grey characters which elevated the story to near perfection for me.

3.5

01/04/2023:
Okay, so after some thinking I've decided to give this one a 3.5/5 rating. I'll be honest: I was hoping for more. I was hoping for magic and witchcraft and lesbians, and if we did get the lesbians, I'm still looking for the magic and witchcraft... I did find the atmosphere I love oh so much in dark academia novels, but that's about it. Also, wasn't a big fan of the characters (which isn't always a bad thing but here I just wanted to slap them).
I know 3.5 isn't a bad rating (at least in my book), but I was still hoping to give it more... Oh, well.

Honestly I don't know how to rate this book yet. Gonna give myself a few days before I settle for one.

I loved the general plot and gothic atmosphere of this — it sucked me in right away. There were a few little things I didn’t love and I kind of wish the story had gone somewhere else right at the end, but overall I enjoyed my reading experience.

how did i pick this read after reading these violent delights by micah nemerever?? i dont know.
this book is very good.  super atmostpheric.  i audibly gasped a few times.  i felt like ellis was a bit less developed than i wanted, but in the end, i understand why.  i also liked the light commentary about the role of womens mental health in horror novels, and how their experiences are discredited despite their inclinations for the truth.  this book is peak gaslight gatekeep girlboss.
slight spoilers for these violent delights below, in conversation with a lesson in vengeance.

- you dont understand how fortuitous it was for me to pick this up after these violent delights.  like gays going through violent things together and it ends up destroying them?
- people keeping secrets from one another but also holding evidence against each other in sick and twisted ways?  when the romance is purely physical, and its hard for them to feel love, because love isnt what they see?  rather, they share violence and an inclination to controlling one another?
- i really like these novels about obsession, and the idea that one of the characters finds pleasure in the perverse, and thus feels shame, despite the other character accepting them for who they are
- and the book being dedicated to felicity?? as if she knew what was going to happen anyway?  just like the chess game with julian and paul?
- and i really like how ambiguous the magic is in this book?  like was she really being haunted? did the magic actually exist?  my skewed answer is yes.  that doesnt mean she wasnt being gaslit so hard.
- to end, this book has no men in it.  slay.

Holy shit this was excellent. I want to read everything this author writes. The story seems predictable at times but always surprises you instead, keeps you doubting yourself and the protagonist. The imagery is uniquely evocative. Highly recommend.

Fine. It's a fairly engaging and enjoyable experience to listen to this. I didn't find it to spectacular, just a pretty solid YA novel.
