A thought-provoking take on how society perpetuates the narrative of humans at the top, acting like gods. The connections to indigenous perspectives on how to move to a future that includes the well being for all life is still very relative. I like the gorilla!!

I really liked the beginning of this book and then it really fell off. I found it super super repetitive and not particularly insightful. The characters are super irrelevant and this easily could have been an essay, didn’t need to be a whole ass book. This gives the vibe of a white dude doing shrooms and discovering empathy. Like genuinely the philosophy went nowhere, didn’t make any big discoveries, and our main character doesn’t develop or learn anything.

Got recommended this book as I’m interested in the topic of the evolution of humanity and society, but was very annoyed with the writing style from the start. It has some good thoughts that were maybe prescient for the time, but reads in a very circular, repetitive, and self-important way that takes forever to get to a point (that is not as profound as it makes itself out to be) and then repeats that same point in as many ways as it can. I wanted to finish it because it’s become sort of a classic, but after reading other reviews I realized I wasn’t going to get anything else out of it that I didn’t get from the first half of the book.
