A book that I feel everyone must read once in their life. It puts a new light onto the things we find normal. Coming to this book with an open mind may end up changing your life.

An altogether unique and important philosophical book that questions many cultural concepts which humans take for granted and examines how we became so separate from, and destructive of our planet. Ishmael will level up your thinking and challenge your mind. This is one of the most important books I have ever read and aligns with much of what I have observed in the world. We need this book now more than ever.

"if you can't discover what's keeping you in, the will to get out soon becomes confused and ineffectual" p. 25
P. 34 - 35 captivity of the people in Hitler's Germany (parallels to Trumps America??)
Mother Culture vs Mother Nature p. 37
Leavers vs Takers p. 39
"Takers regard the world as ...a machine designed to maintain and produce human life"
"we're not destroying the world because we're clumsy. We're destroying the world because we are, in a very literal and deliberate way, at war with it" 130
"once you exempt yourself from the law of limited competition, everything in the world except your food and the food of your food becomed an enemy to be exterminated" p. 132
"in order to halt this process, you must face the fact that increasing food production doesn't feed your hungry, it only fuels your population explosion" p. 140
Takers as white people p. 174-175
"In our own cultural history, the adoption of agriculture was a prelude to ascent. In these stories agriculture is the lot of the fallen" p.178
In regards to the destiny of man, " Man is the first of all these... His destiny is to be the first to learn that creatures like man (self-aware and intelligent) have a choice: they can try to thwart the gods and perish in the attempt-- or they can stand aside and make some room for all the rest" p. 242
"the world doesn't need to belong to man -- but it does need man to belong to it... Man does have a place in the world, but it's not his place to rule... Man's place is to be the first without being the last. Man's place is to figure out how it's possible to do that-- and then to make some room for all the rest who are capable of becoming what he's become." P. 243
"look around you and you'll see some creatures who act as though the world belongs to them and some creatures who act as they belong to the world. Can you tell them apart?" P. 245
"it should be noted that what is crucial to your survival as a race is not the redistribution of power in wealth within the prison but the destruction of the prison itself" p.253

A bunch of whitewashed savior complex. Treats indigenous practices and people like they are a thing of the past and also just got facts about the cultures completely wrong. I can see how people like this book and it can be a good intro for people who have never thought about caring for the world around them or how we got here but the call to action is weak and again so many things wrong. Outdated for sure. If you’re gonna talk about our planet being destroyed talk about the billionaires and corporations doing it.

Don’t be a Taker
