made me think — succinctly summarizes many aspects that are “wrong” with modern civilization. The age of the book does show in a couple of chapters about population control stemming from carrying capacity, although i think the author’s central thesis stands strong. the way of story telling was engaging for me. though repetitive and slow going, it allowed time for me to think.

Wow. This book deserves more stars that 5… what a beautiful book that fully shifted how I talk about how the world. How I see the world.
Lingering thoughts..
-if I’m so convinced that my next chapter in life is centered in agriculture, how can I be the type of agriculturalist that lets other beings thrive also? Agroecology?
-perhaps it’s worth my time to learn biblical stories… they are the myths that set the tone for the way that we tell history (at least in taker societies)
-I want to know more about the leaver societies that existed in Europe and Asia before the takers overran them and replaced them and erased their history.
-to insist that humans change their behavior, I must insist that they change their perspective. That’s what all my studies have hovered around.
-and then the next step is how to inspire change, a transition form a taker mindset to a leaver mindset.
-what stories will I tell to encourage other willing students around me to unlearn the stories that mother culture tells us? —stories that will help us to pivot, help us choose to deny instant comfort and instant gratification. To preserve life, all of creation, we need to act like we belong to creation. The rest of “god’s” recreation does not belong to us! We’ve gotten it confused!! releasing the god complex, releasing the desire to control the world and all beings in it, and shifting rather to a model of reciprocity is the way toward maintaining a world livable for life as we know it.
-there will always be life. But as we know it! The familiar beings are going extinct bc of humans’ obsession with uniformity and control and this all traces back to agriculture.
-wow I could read this book over and over again.
