Ooh - this is the story of Mr. Rochester's "crazy" wife in the attic in Jane Eyre! As if I didn't already love Jane Eyre enough!
This book has been around since the 60s. How did I not know what this was about? (the red herring title and cover art, perhaps?) LOL
*** Good, but not AS good as I had hoped. I think if I had a better understanding of Colonial Caribbean history, I would have gotten more out of this.

L'unico difetto dei romanzi di Jean Rhys è che sono troppo brevi e i salti temporali sono gestiti in modo un po' strano. Una delle autrici che mi avrebbe fatto piacere conoscere a scuola piuttosto che col passaparola dei social.

After I’ve reread the book, I am even more in awe. Rhys is so incredible. Her techniques that really make you empathize with Antoinette in a way where Antoinette does not seem mat at all. She is not mad!!! She makes complete sense. And yet!!!!!!! I am overwhelmed (in a good way).
I read this so fast and I think I will definitely be rereading it again and again over the course of the summer. It was so excellent and so heartbreaking. Such a thought-provoking representation of the psychological effects of colonialism and patriarchal oppression. You can just SEE how it withers away Antoinette's mind. It's right there and as a reader I feel helpless as a witness. It's so raw, so real.
