This book was a bit of a mess and at times maddening, not unlike the main character, Antoinette. I bought this book to read because I'm a massive Jane Eyre fan. This is a prequel published in 1966, well over a 100 years after Jane Eyre - a sort of fan fiction that aims to tell the story of the mad woman in the attic. I found it incoherent and a blundery mess. Felt very unclear at the end. Not my cup of tea.

I hated Rochester a LOT in Jane Eyre & in this book, I found myself hating him SO MUCH MORE.
THERE IS A SPOILER IN HERE, BUT IT'S NOT A BIG ONE. :)
Surprisingly, many do not share my take on Jane Eyre and of the character Rochester. See my review of Jane Eyre for this information. But really, I really really really hate Rochester.

This was a GREAT book! I actually enjoyed reading it moreso than Jane Eyre. It's easier to read & and takes the perspecitve of Rochester & Antoinette (also called Bertha in Jane Eyre). We see beyond the 'mad wife of Rochester' and instead look into what drove her to reach that point of insanity, and it's a very tragic, heartbreaking story to watch a fragile character, unloved by most, undergo endless cruelty & inhumane treatment from those in her community & even her own husband, who SLEPT WITH ANOTHER WOMAN IN THE ROOM RIGHT NEXT DOOR SO SHE'D HAVE TO HEAR THEM. I literally wanted

And then, because she is a woman, she has no money, no property because of the laws at the time that deemed Rochester the sole heir of all her money.

God. This was a great story. I have such empathy for Antoinette. My heart bleeds for her. So much.

I really LOVED this sister book to Jane Eyre, which gave me a much greater understanding to Rochester (he's an asshat) and Antoinette. I still love Jane's character in Jane Eyre (except for the fact that she stupidly married Rochester. Ugh.). GREAT great book, well worth the read, especially if you're one of those who liked Rochester. A lot of people attribute loving him to the fact that they saw the movie & he was this beautiful creature, which, okay, I understand. But he's not attractive in the books, looks wise nor personality wise.

Anyway, I digress. Love this book. Read it if you read Jane Eyre. It's fantastic & well written.

the first part was good ? the writing style is nice but oh my god not all of us have read jane eyre yet. or care to. in terms of a prequel it had so much unknown information and references in that i had to look up half the characters. i didn’t care at all past the second half and it just seemed to be a long way to justify their messed up relationship? eh. style was nice.
