Not one of the best Poirot novels I would say. I read it after reading 'Murder of Roger Ackroyd'. So I felt the graph subside down to an extent. A one-time read, I would say.
I love Agatha Christie’s books, this one is no exception. It has passed some time since my last book of hers, thus making me really pleasantly surprised by the etiquette of that time. Not my favorite read of hers due to the fact that the first part of the book is constructed around speculations, hypotheses and theories, too subjective. The second thing that bothered me was the repetition of the leitmotif of the “elephants”, it re-emerges persistently to such level that it annoyed me.
I guessed the solution of the case, but still, Poirot’s investigation presentment was a delight.
Would recommend the book to Agatha’s lovers, would not recommend as a first read of hers, as it might not be as thrilling as her other masterpieces.

This was the first Agatha Christie novel that I have ever read. The plot itself was super good and kept me engaged throughout the whole read. I find the main character, Hercule Poirot to be so interesting. Definitely one of the most well-written detective character in my opinion.
I look forward to reading more Agatha Christie novels!

This is one of the many Christie novels that I knew nothing about when I picked it out at random from my library. I have seen reviews complaining that the protagonist was annoying and, though I wasn't sure of her purpose in the story, I didn't have a problem with her.
My problem comes with the plot. More than any other, this mystery didn't have the atmosphere and suspense of Christie's other novels. I guessed the ending by the halfway point mostly due to the interviews of various characters.
Overall I enjoyed this novel, though the mystery itself felt quite average and predictable. I would recommend it if, like me, you're trying to read all of Agatha Christie's books.

Așteptările mele de la acest roman polițist erau destul de mari având în vedere că o implicau pe doamna Oliver, un oersonaj simpatic care îmi este foarte drag și pe care eu îl consider într-o oarecare măsură proiecția Agathei Christie în universul pe care l-a creat pentru detectivul belgian.
Intriga este un pic mai special, lucru care face acestă carte un pic mai interesantă. În locul unei crime proaspăt produse care trebuie rezolvată, avem de-a face cu o întâmplare nefericită din trecut, numită de către autorități o dublă sinucidere și un eveniment foarte nefericit. Doamna Oliver este rugată să cerceteze puțin problema și bineînțeles că apelează la bunul său prieten Hercule Poirot.
În timp ce detectivul nu părăsește prea mult confortul locuinței sale, doamna Oliver aleargă, se agită, face vizite și încearcă să vorbească cu cât mai multe persoane care ar putea să își amintească ceva despre crima respectivă. Într-un final, tot detectivul belgian pune lucrurile cap la cap și găsește o rezolvare pentru acest mister.
Acțiunea curge frumos și este o lectură extrem de realxantă, perfectă pentru o zi relaxantă de vară, petrecută în hamac, pe plajă sau pe tren. A fost foarte plăcut pentru mine să citesc diferitele perspective ale personajelor care își amintesc aspecte diferite cu privire la aceleași persoane și aceeași întâmplare.
Cu toate acestea, cartea nu a fost la fel de spectaculoasă sau încălcită ca ambele. Nu o să mă laud că mi-am dat seama de tot mobilul crimei, dar am elucidat suficient din mister pe cont propriu lucru care nu se prea întâmplă când citesc Agatha Christie. Asta m-a făcut să scad câteva steluțe, dar ca să fiu sinceră, am citit destule cărți de Agatha Christie, cred că sunt peste 20, deci poate încep să mă prind mai repede de unele lucruri.
În orice caz, recomand cartea. Se citește repede, iar pentru mine aceste romane mereu sunt soluția potrivită care mă scoate din reading slump.

Honestly this one reminds me of the 1940s movie The Uninvited. It was just like any other Poirot really!
