Honestly this one reminds me of the 1940s movie The Uninvited. It was just like any other Poirot really!
I am on an Agatha Christie run right now. This book is a Hercule Poirot mystery. This is a story of a woman,Mrs. Ariadne Oliver, that is approached while at a literary luncheon by some one unknown to her, Mrs. Burton-Cox, about Mrs. Oliver's goddaughter's parents deaths fifteen years earlier. Mrs. Burton-Cox is curious to learn the truth about the murder/suicide of Celia Ravenscroft's parents.
This was a different type of mystery that was interesting to follow. You already know who the victims are you are just trying to learn who was killed first. Who was the actual person to murder and then commit suicide. Mrs. Burton-Cox is concerned because her son and Celia are planning to get married. She doesn't want her son marrying some one who may decide to kill her son. As the story progresses you start to feel that there is an underlying reason for Mrs. Burton-Cox's true concerns.

Enjoyed this one much more than the last couple! Good characters, nice little mystery. Third Girl and Hallowe'en Party really irritated me with all the pseudo-psychology and badly-aged criminal theory, but this one has a lot less of that. Instead, we have a small, long ago mystery which really needs to be solved for the peace of mind of the people who were closest. It's really quite simple, but the way stories are woven around the characters was nice and quite interesting. Plus we get lots of Ariadne Oliver, who is a delight!
I actually almost solved this one. I got some parts of the final reveal right but not all, so I’m counting this as a win for me

One of Agatha Christies better novels, out of a career of good novels.
This one was a sort of relaxing book as the case is a cold case and the mystery is solved by collecting memories of 'elephants' or older people who had bits and pieces of the story.
The ending became quite obvious about 3/4s of the way through the book but I found that didn't ruin my enjoyment.

Moderate: Ableism, Mental illness
Melodramatic, ridiculous, with disappointingly stereotyped representation of mental illness. We follow the novel as clues are gathered, and it isn't a tightly wound mystery because there's no conflict in the way of the truth. The big reveal is just someone recounting what really happened. Poirot and Ariadne Oliver were quite unnecessary; if Celia had just asked Zelie what happened, there would be no need for this whole book. Agatha Christine's novels are always a fun, quick read. Perfect for spending a morning off in bed.
Elephants can remember, but we are human beings and mercifully human beings can forget.
What a bittersweet novel!
I thoroughly enjoyed every second of it and the audiobook was really good. I can't wait to read more from Agatha Christie!
