I love this series, but this was kind of a slog, especially the first couple chapters. You know that people have been messed with, and you start to sort out the details of how many people, whether it's just their memories, how much of the world, etc. But that becomes pretty clear early on, and you always know who's responsible, and you have a general sense of how it's going to be resolved. Meanwhile, Tybalt, who's usually delightful, is annoying.
So many complications! I had a great time but with the way it ended I'm wondering what the point of book 18 is.

This newest installment of McGuire's October Daye series picks up immediately after the previous book and takes off running. Or, well, walking quickly, because that's what happy, obedient changelings do. Toby and much of fae is trapped inside an illusion, and her loyal family members have to save the day by convincing her that she's not just a servant created for her sister August. This conceit, which normally would cause me ridiculous anxiety, works really well here, and McGuire does a wonderful job of showing readers how Toby would always have been herself when faced with adversity. This book will make almost no sense to readers unfamiliar with the series, but hey--it's a great time to start at the beginning, knowing that this is waiting for you when you get there.
I’ll admit, I was skeptical of the premise of this book and Innocent Sleep. I usually really dislike alternate reality and amnesia stories and we were already in not-for-Sams territory with the pregnancy revealed in the last book. But I trust Seanan McGuire fully and once again she proved to me that I need to just relax and let her take me on this journey with Toby.
I love these characters so much. There are so many of them by now and so many plot points and emotional beats that this book was a series of gut punches over and over. I was listening to the audiobook and the minute I heard “Aunt Birdy?” I burst into tears in the middle of the crochet project. My spouse tried to ask me what was wrong, but it turns out I can’t explain 17 books worth of lore while sobbing.
This book had a lot of callbacks to the early books in this series and it was really cool to see how Toby has grown and changed, especially in comparison to what might have been. It was such a painful setup, but it was also so captivating.
And I am absolutely certain that Innocent Sleep is going to be even more devastating. I love these books and I can’t wait to see where Seanan is taking them. They have such a hold on my heart.

slow-paced
Can easily skip this one. Feels like a DnD game with a bad GM where everything is on the rails and the main characters get shuttled from on scene to another for exposition and a random encounter.
