I enjoyed learning about the myths the authors pulled from at the end of each story, but didn't enjoy the stories themselves as much as I thought I would. There were a couple standouts, shoutout to Alyssa Wong who is amazing as always, and it's always interesting to see how authors have transformed and interpreted the folktales and lore from their own cultures. However, I think most of them lacked an emotional impact and didn't make a lasting impression on me.

As with all short story collections, there were entries in this collection that I liked more than others. It's hard to rate one book that has so many different authors contributing! However, there are some definite standouts: Forbidden Fruit, Olivia's Table, and The Land of Morning Calm in particular were beautiful and moving.
This collection is worth reading just for its premise: all of the submissions are twists on fantasy or folklore tales from South and East Asia. It's a refreshing departure from the Euro-centric tales that have dominated my reading, and about time we see more diverse folklore in YA (well, in any genre.)
I also liked that at the end of each story, the author had a quick page where she explained both the original legend the story was based on and her reasons for adding the particular twist she did.

I'm so disappointed. I really love the concept of this collection but I think the writing wasn't really exceptional and could have undergone more editing.
I forgot the titles but the best stories were at most 4 stars and the worst ones were as low as 1.5 stars.
I really appreciate what this book stands for though so I hope more well-written books would come!
