Savannah Dupree is a freshman studying at Boston University. She also has the remarkable ability of psychometry, which puts her life in danger after she touches an old sword that shows her a terrible death and that vampires are real.
This was a short, action packed novella that shows how Gideon and Savannah found each other. Gideon is a dangerous warrior but he turns into a sweet and affectionate man around Savannah. It was quite adorable. Savannah is a smart woman with a fascinating ability. These two were very enjoyable characters who had a quick and intense attraction.
While this novella is considered a novella, it only goes over the basics of the Breed and this world. These two do play important roles in the rest of the series though so it was nice to see their initial meeting. Also I enjoyed seeing Gideon out in the field destroying rogues.

Endlich lerne ich die beiden kennen
Savannah ist eine junge Studentin der Kunstgeschichte im ersten Studienjahr, die eine fast magische Fähigkeit hat. Wenn sie Gegenstände berührt, dann kann sie Ereignisse aus der Vergangenheit sehen. Natürlich berührt sie ein antikes Schwert, während sie ein spezielles Projekt für einen ihrer Professoren durchführt. Dabei wird sie Zeugin eines Mordes, welcher vor Hunderten von Jahren geschah und der Mörder ist ein blonder Krieger, der sie trotz der Gewalt fasziniert. Doch dann wird das Schwert gestohlen und Savannah kann ihren Augen kaum trauen, als genau dieser blonde Krieger fast drei Jahrhunderte später vor ihr steht und sie in die vor der Menschheit verborgene Welt des Stammes einführt.
Dieser blonde Krieger ist natürlich keine geringerer als Gideon, welcher sich im Verlauf der Reihe als wahrer Technikfreak entpuppt. In dieser Novella erhalten die Leserinnen und Leser einen kleinen Einblick in diese Entwicklung, dadurch das Setting Anfang der 70er Jahre des 20. Jahrhunderts spielt. Gideon ist ein Stammesvampir und Teil des Ordens, einer von acht Kriegern dieser Spezies. Sie sind im Grunde Vampire, die die Menschen vor abtrünnigen Vampiren, sogenannten Rogues, beschützen. Diese Rogues sind der Blutgier verfallen und haben keine Kontrolle mehr über ihre niederen animalischen Instinkte, welche sie von ihren Vorfahren, den Ältesten, geerbt haben.
Da ich den Großteil der Reihe bereits gelesen habe, aber wegen neueren ungelesenen Bänden noch einmal von Vorne anfangen wollte, musste ich auch einfach mit der Vornovelle zu Midnight Breed beginnen. Und es war wundervoll in die Geschichte um Gideon und Savannah einzutauchen. Nach vielen Jahren, als ich das damals für mich letzte Buch der Reihe gelesen hatte, muss ich auch sagen, dass diese Novelle alles hat, was eine Vorgeschichte benötigt. Sie führt die Leserinnen und Leser kurz und knapp in die Welt der Stammesvampire und ihrer Gefährtinnen ein, ohne bereits zu viel zu verraten.
Ein kleines Manko
Es hat mir gefallen, über eines der ersten Liebespaare des Ordens zu lesen, wie sich kennengelernt und gegenseitig geholfen haben. Natürlich lässt Lara Adrian ihr für die Reihe typische Erotik nicht missen. Ein wenig enttäuscht war ich von der fehlenden verführerischen „Geekiness“ Gideons, aber ich konnte ja schlecht soviel Computertechnik in den 70er Jahren erwarten. Allein schon die Tatsache, dass er sich damals in irgendeine Datenbank gehackt haben soll, kam mir ein wenig weit hergeholt vor. Muss aber auch gestehen, dass ich nicht weiß, wann die Amerikanischer mit digitalen Datenbanken begonnen haben, auch wenn Google es sicher beantworten könnte.

When she accidentally touches a sword in an archive storage room at Boston University, she sees a golden-haired warrior using the sword before the vision breaks up. Almost obsessed with who he might be, she returns the next day to touch it again. This time she sees young twin boys slaughtered by a monster, a creature that simply cannot exist.
Gideon, a vampire warrior, has been dedicated to the Order for three hundred years. Their mission is take out Rogue vampires and to keep their existence a secret. He doesn't have time for lovers, much less Breedmates, women who are destined to love vampires for their lives.
When Savannah's roommate, meeting her predatory professor after hours, is killed and the professor badly injured, Savannah is horrified. When an interview with the press is aired with Savannah claiming that a sword is missing and describing it, Gideon sees the broadcast. He knows that sword. It disappeared after the murder of his younger brothers. He finds himself not only sexually attracted to Savannah, but determined to protect her.
This is a prequel to the Midnight Breed series, although it was published long after the series began. This is the first of the series that I have read and there is a lot that I like about it. Just not enough to love it.
This is set in 1974, but the author very wisely just dropped in the bits and bobs that place it in time without overwhelming the reader. For instance, Gideon is fascinated by the possibilities of a smaller computer. Savannah checks back into the library the current patron favorite book "Carrie".
Something I didn't expect was getting to know the hero and heroine before they even hear about each other, much less meet in person. It is 26% into the novella before they do meet face to face.
While I mostly liked the story, I didn't love it. I think my biggest issue was Savannah's age. She is still a few months away from her 19th birthday, practically a child. She needs time to grow into herself, to become more emotionally stable and secure before she should get into any relationship, vampire or human. Seriously, it isn't about Gideon's age or what he is, it is about a person on the cusp of womanhood who still runs home to her sister whenever something affects her equilibrium. Adding a blood bond that sticks Savannah and Gideon together for life? Not healthy.

So the first book I read to enter into 2017 was a vampire romance novella... I regret nothing!
This was a good novella to start the series off with. Good characters and exciting plot. I liked the heroines gift to see snippets of the past in objects - it was something a little different.
The start of the book was unquestionably better than the end. I got a little sick of the heroine who suddenly became a spectator after she slept with the hero. Something a lot of romance novels do is the couple get together and then the story suffers for it. :(
But - if you are looking for a simple little romance to fill an afternoon then you can't go wrong with anything from this author. And this one is free in the kindle store so even better!

This was roughhhh. I might give up on this series after reading book 8, also set in Alaska. I found this boring and it was just not for me.
Even though I only gave the book 3 stars, I really enjoyed the book and look forward to reading the rest of the series. I gave it 3 stars because it is so very similar (borderline same stories, just change the names) to Christine Feehan's Carpathian Series and JR Ward's Black Dagger Brotherhood. I felt most of the concepts and storyline were taken from those two series and meshed into one with only a slight twist of ET added.
this is my first book by this author I picked up book one not knowing there was a .5 so I am glad that this was free. I adore Gideon and Savannah, the detail in this book is amazing and makes me want to keep reading.
