Wow. I wasn't sure how much I was going to like this when I bought it last May, but I definitely didn't need to have worried about that.

I finally picked this up since I'm planning on getting it signed soon, and I am so glad I did. This felt like a much more realistic dystopia than I'm used to, but I really enjoyed that aspect of it. Lazarus was action-packed from the start, and it just kept going from there.

Forever is the Lazarus of her family, it's protector. Essentially this means she listens to orders from her father and goes out and kicks ass. In-between she has some more emotional moments, and then the action picks right up again. Greg Rucka has done an amazing job of building this world into something that's completely believable and interesting. Not to mention he's created yet another amazing, kickass female character and done a great job not having her fall into negative tropes.

As for the art, I usually prefer having brighter, more superhero-comic-like color palettes and art styles in graphic novels, but that's not the case with this. Michael Lark and Santi Arcas did an amazing job with the art and coloring. Every aspect of it really helped to contribute to the story, whether it was the amazing use of body posture and facial expressions, (which is so rarely used to it's full potential) or the use of warm and cool colors to initiate feeling in a scene.

The end of Lazarus vol. 1 came way too quickly for me, I'm dying to go out and buy the rest of the series now to find out what happens next in Forever's story.

One of my favourite comic series at the moment and honestly look forward to every new TPB. It's part dystopian future, part modern Godfather, and lots of ass-kicking. it makes you question your assumptions by continually reminding you that this is not the world you live in and not everything will make sense, but at the same time, human nature doesn't really change. Be prepared to be entertained and to be emotionally involved on every arc, and emotionally invested in the characters, especially Forever.

So it's Mad Max world-building mixed in with some Terminator Sci-Fi. There is so much setting of the story that things don't get going very fast. From what I could tell, the story is told from the point of the bad guys - one of the few powerful families in charge as Earth's resources have waned and the rich have gotten VERY rich. Lazarus or "Forever" as she is named is a mysteriously interesting character. Hopefully her promise is fulfilled. Lark is a perfect artist for Greg Rucka. Rucka, who is best with gritty detective stories - this one really isn't that - matches well with Lark's famously gritty and dark style.

Great concept, tough world and an interesting main character in Forever. Not in love with the art as it makes it a bit hard to see difference between characters, and Forever is somewhat lasciviously drawn at times. However I'm intrigued and will keep reading.

Although Lazarus is reminiscent of other works, I really enjoyed it. There's a bit of a mafia movie meets "Real Housewives" feel with powerful families (including spoiled conniving members) running the world in some sort of neo-feudalism, but it works. I like the art and somber color palette. I have a feeling that Forever will shape up to be one of the kick-ass, conflicted action heroines that I love (main character in Velvet and Nikita from La Femme Nikita, for example). I'm looking forward to more.

Forever, cannot die and she must protect the family interests. While she is called sister, she is beginning to suspect she is not. When a war between the two families is about to erupt Forever must work to make peace. However, when she is attacked she must go after one of her own.

While I enjoyed the story, the are it very different and something to get used to.

Forever's pretty badass, but this was not engaging.
