One of the best books I’ve read in a long time. This book consumed my every thought for a few days after reading and I’m eagerly working on the rest of the series. The only reason it is not 5 stars is because the author uses rape and sexual assault as a plot device in an odd way. It is constantly mentioned, and seemingly vital to some characers’ stories. Yet it’s somehow always on the periphery, so content warnings don’t show it but they’re inescapable. Really messed with my immersion when I had to listen to characters throw in threats and stories of raping people along with their villainous plans.

Review from 2nd re-read: This was yet another re-read for me!

Once again I am back to
hating Tamlin with a fiery passion,
order has returned to the world!

Something about this re-read just hit different and it really got me in the feels at quite a few points throughout the book. I just had such a good time revisiting this world and seeing
Feyre and Rhys fall in love once again.
I was also pleasantly surprised by some of the scenes that I had either forgotten about or didn't realise were in this book.

Overall this was a really positive re-read experience for me <3

The difference between this book and ACOTAR was NIGHT AND DAY (no pun intended). I fell in love with these characters and their beautiful, devastating brokenness. What was so lovely about this book is that those characters also fell in love with their flaws, and became better individuals for it. It was heartwarming to read of characters that never gave up on each other, particularly when it was extremely difficult. That, and they made good choices most of the time. When they didn't, they owned up to, and grew from, those moments. I do love love, but I love it even more when it seems like the right kind of love, whether it be sibling, friendship, romantic, or other kinds of love.

That, and a TON of plot happened in this book.
The backdrop of a budding war with global life or death stakes, a discovery of not only fated love, but a healthy love, really put this book over the edge for me.

I won't say it's the most beautifully written, nor is it a groundbreaking literary achievement, but this story captured my heart, and I look forward to reading it again.

I enjoyed the romp. And it was much better than book 1 because the first act most forward quickly.

Enjoyed:
- sarcasm and humour
- exhibitionism in a spicy scene (ch42)
- the adventures and questing
- Lucien is smart
- hybern king trapped rhysand.  The plot needs a setback and I found R’s ‘I know best’ leadership implausible.

Disliked:
- hyperbolic narration (eg “the words the only sounds in the silent, dark city”)
- gendering
- turning tamlin into a 2D character for the first act. It was a missed opportunity to demonstrate lack of communication in their relationship
- odd to see writer use of concepts of marriage,  hell, male  and woman. Inconsistent
- repetitive narration (traitor, he has suffered on “another level”)
- pairing up of characters
- finale. Messy and contrived and melodramatic dialogue.
- comparing her and his trauma.
- tropes and plot devices were clunky more often than not.
- the volume of weapons made with ash wood

The only reason I’m not giving this five stars is THE ENDING BEING A CLIFFHANGER LIKE CMON. I hate cliffhangers so much; they feel like a cheap way out. Besides that, I absolutely devoured this book (especially chapter 55, omg). This series has me in a trance that I haven’t been in since my crazy middle school hunger games phase, haha.

there was more plot in the last 50 pages of this book than the 600 pages preceding it

every woman in this book has a traumatic backstory that almost always includes rape, sexual assault, torture or attempted murder. and every man in this book has a woman in his life who that happened to

also, fun drinking game: take a shot every time women are called "females", you will DIE

I mean I know I read this before but that plot twist at the end is still blowing my mind.
It's a powerful story and I do like it very much but in my eyes it will never compare to ToG.
With that said it's still a 5 ⭐ read and always will be.
