This was a weird book. And I don’t think there was really any meaning behind anything. I genuinely think Moshfegh wrote this book just to weird people out.

First book I've read by Moshfegh, so I'm not used to how she writes. This was a struggle to read through; there are no chapter breaks, the only breaks you get are with indented paragraphs spaced apart, the book wasn't really focused on a plot in particular, and despite the blurb on the back describing occult happenings there was little to none. Overall, the book is filled with misery and the suffering of all the characters involved in a telling of a fictional historic medieval town, and the only technical plot point that barely keeps the story going.
