Absolutely vile and insufferable characters but I couldn’t stop reading 😳 I think the point was how religion/capitalism is used to control over people who don’t know any better. Those in power are often terrible people who couldn’t care less for those under them. It had an overall theme of life is meaningless/“stupid” which is pretty annoying after a while. Not sure what to think!

I love the commentary on religion and class. However, this book also comments on things that most books don’t acknowledge and it gets gross. I simply didn’t have the stomach for it, which is not to say that this book is bad. For me it’s a definite 4 stars, but, the open talk of poop, semen, spit, and breast milk..i couldn’t eat and read this.

SPOILERS!!!

I pushed through but i skipped the grape scene because i felt nauseous, and then I made it to Ina eating spiders and later eating another human. I just couldn’t do it 😭.

Bad and disgusting. It’s as if the author thought that writing all known atrocities made them a good writer. It doesn’t.

Moshfegh is really Moshfeghing with this one.

Dark, grimey, disturbing and grotesque.

But somehow enthralling. Like an accidental medieval Saltburn.

No one is likeable in this book, and everyone from the most pious to the most godless have twisted morals.

 I loved it.
