Gut-wrenching lil' heartbreaker of a book. An important piece of Canadian history, to bring home the findings of the Truth and Reconciliation commission on residential schools. Canada's indigenous peoples had a raw deal; this book in its rawness shares the pain, a good pain, one that makes way for healing. Read it. It will only take you an hour.

I most definitely think this book is over-rated BUT I did love the read and for someone who has no idea about the history of the indigenous children, this is an awesome eye opener. It's a great gate-way to other books on the same topic. It was simple and an easy read.

I think other books on the same topic would be a better read, though.

Heartbreaking, especially because it’s true. The illustrations by Kent Monkman really make it so gorgeous.
I recommend this to anyone trying to build empathy for the many indigenous children who suffered through Canadian residential schools.

To be honest, not one of my favorite book from Joseph Boyden. Thought it could have been flushed out more in differentiating the boys thought process, speech and action, which seemed melded together.
