Such a tiny little book....with such a heartbreaking story behind it.
Told from alternating perspectives - Charlie and the many animals, insects etc that cross his path - it's almost fairytale-like in its telling.
And when I say fairytale...I mean the original fairytales that were dark and scary and nothing that should happen or be told to children.
Charlie will stick with me a long time.
*For those that didn't know - while this story is historical fiction, Charlie or "Chanie" as he was known was a real Ojibwe boy who died along railroad tracks trying to return to the family from which he was stolen.

This story was beautifully written but so sad. It is something that should be read by all Canadians. It is an eye opening story about a subject that is ignored in much of Canadian history. The authors use of the animals as one view point was so well done and touching. They knew what was happening and followed Chanie on his journey, This book is a literary work that shines a light on the injustices that were faced by so many First Nations children. Powerful and moving
