Okay, I will freely admit I am having somewhat of a love affair with Georgette Heyer novels right now. In this one, Arabella is the eldest daughter of a country clergyman who is invited to London to visit her godmother for the social season. She meets a town dandy called the Nonpareil before she even gets there, and his arrogance leads her to falsely claim that she is a wealthy heiress. Arabella is also young and beautiful, and, along with the (false) rumors of her wealth, these lead her to tremendous popularity in town. Some of the courtship scenes in this were so endearing that they made me laugh out loud. I loved this one.

The fact that there are so many positive reviews for this book is truly stunning. We start with what seems like it could be a fun plot, but end up with a boring protagonist, a contrived plot, and an ending that makes me question what fantasy people find in this novel.

It’s obvious that Heyer is a historian first and author next, and her attention to detail is apparent in each of her pages. This is a naive, short, regency set romance which reads slow due to it’s fixation on historically accurate detail on objects - particularly clothing. I don’t think I enjoyed it, but I know I missed reading Austen.
