Arabella

Georgette Heyer

I enjoyed Arabella more than I thought I would. I’d had it on my “Want to read list” but forgot what it was about. Usually books that begin with a big lie give me serious anxiety, but this book wasn’t so bad.
All of the Georgette Heyer books I’ve read are very silly and lighthearted, not to be compared with Pride and Prejudice or any of Jane Austen’s other work (in my opinion). I actually find this book and a few of Georgette’s other books to be quite a bit like “the importance of being Earnest” because she writes with such humor. I enjoyed this book more than any of her others. The main character was both sweet and kind, she didn’t make me think “if only you would just say what you thought!” Because she DID say what she thought (for the most part).
The ending was also not disappointing, which is a big deal to me because a bad ending ruins a good book for me. The ending itself was probably a 7.5/10, it was acceptable.

Reread.

Possibly my favorite Heyer. Unquestionably top 3. Even though it has so many of the conventional elements, love that the heroine and hero bond over something unconventional for a Regency Romance.

Basically here for Ulysses.

Heyer's funniest book. Beaumaris and Arabella are so funny, especially in the second half. Ulysses the dog and how Beaumaris talked to him made me smile the whole way through. I found the romance to be so cute. My favorite Heyer book.

4.5 Stars. Initially I thought I wouldn't like it because the beginning was really slow and with lots of unnecessary scenes. However I ended up enjoying it even more than Frederica. Beaumaris and Bellas dialogues were so witty and entertaining! And I adored what he did for her, especially as he tricked her into believing they would elope. As a reader you knew he wouldn't do that and seeing Bella so anxious was really funny! My favourite Heyer si far!

Read this through quarantine and for the GH book club. I thoroughly enjoyed it and it was just the kind of escapist romance I needed while recuperating. It was a breeze to read, Mr Beaumaris was indeed swoon worthy. Laughter between the couple is always a good sign. Heyer really knows how to write a romance. There's a certain charm to reading a Heyer. I feel like it's similar to how I feel when I watch an Astaire romance too.
