In grad school, which was an intense and stressful time, I read pretty much everything P.G. Wodehouse had written. Wodehouse was exactly what I needed, and I didn't care at all that the books were all basically the same and pretty darn predictable. I devoured them like they were Oreos.
Right now, I'm going through another stressful, intense time (pregnant and raising a toddler) and Heyer is just exactly what I need. Her, and shortbread cookies.
Arabella didn't suck me in quite as quickly as [b:The Grand Sophy|261689|The Grand Sophy|Georgette Heyer|https://d.gr-assets.com/books/1414731822s/261689.jpg|3234291] did, but I ended up loving it just the same.
Arabella, a girl from a relatively modest family, pretends to be an heiress in order to put a snobby rich guy in his place. Of course, it backfires.
Special animal guest star: Ulysses, the mutt with ears (I suspect) like Parker's, adopted off the street.

Turns out in order for me to love a beach read, it just needs to be based in the regency era lol there’s nothing quite like a predictable romance set in the London season. I liked this a little better than Lady of Quality because I found the love interest much more charming

Too many exclamation marks in the dialogue. Otherwise an enjoyable and well written historical romance
I enjoyed this book tremendously. Regency era= awesomeness, and Heyer's style of writing is appropriately formal without being stuffy or boring. I laughed out loud at the absurdity of the situations and the romance was delightful and not too heavy-handed. I stayed up far too late, reading into the night because I couldn't put this book down.

Despite including a lot of my least favourite Heyer tropes (age/experience gap, stupid and RUDE brother threatening to ruin everything etcetc) this was not actively bad. I couldn't really see how arabella and Mr Beaumaris wouldn't end up estranged - girl is STUPID and he treats her with the same indulgence as his dog. Stupid Bertram is my enemy and I don't think Heyer does a good job making him likeable! Beaumaris' deus ex machina fixing of everything at the end didn't feel at all earned, and I reiterate, I cannot see how Arabella and Beaumaris wouldn't kill each other.
I've read this once before and didn't enjoy it quite as much this time as I remembered enjoying it the first time. There were long passages where the author seemed to be showing off her research into and knowledge of the times, including many words that no longer make much sense (at least not to me). Too much time was spent on the sideplot about Arabella's brother. But I do like that this is a clean Regency romance with appropriate behavior. The heroine is a sweet girl if a bit of a ninny, and the hero is a bit like Mr. Darcy as he slowly and unwilling falls in love.
The best part of this book far and away is the mongrel the hero adopts at the heroine's insistence and the conversations the hero has with the dog.

Loved it! This was my first Georgette Heyer book and I can't wait to read more.
Totally lovable characters and full of fun and wit. I ended up telling my kids all about the story because it was just too cute and funny, and they loved it too!
A little hard to get used to reading this style at first. I like to look up words I don't know when I'm reading a book, but after just a few pages I knew it would take me forever to read if I did that. So I just went with the flow and kept reading, not understanding all of the accurate Regency language and descriptions, especially the characters that spoke in cant.
I still understood the dialogue and story perfectly well and was truly charmed by it all. I dare say, Mr. Beaumaris could give Mr. Darcy quite a run for his money! Why, oh why has this not been made into a movie!!
