This was a total redemption after that mediocre second book!

This book was cinematic and visual as hellllllllllll. An avenging angel rescuing abused children and depositing them on the doorstep of an FBI agent, holding a teddybear…..it’s so dramatic and I was living for it! The teddybear and angel motifs were just *chef kiss*

It’s rough reading at times, as this book examines the way the Child Services system absolutely fails children. There are some absolute horrors inflicted on these children that left me wanting to scrub my brain afterward.

***CW: child abuse (sexual and physical) and neglect, meth use***

You can guess who the killer is early on, but it was still nonetheless enjoyable watching it play out. Dot Hutchison does a great job at building tension and ratcheting up the stakes as the story hurtles toward the climax.

I also enjoyed the queer rep, even though the protagonist’s ex girlfriend was a fuckwit. It certainly showed a different angle to workplace relationships and "taking your work home" that I'd never considered before.....

I absolutely love this series, but this was definitely my favorite of the three I’ve read so far. I love the characters- especially Mercedes. I did not want to put this book down- I loved it. This was definitely intense and dark, but it was also beautiful and emotional. I did guess who the killer was, but that didn’t take away from the book at all. I look forward to reading book four!!
