 That blog post got me 12 years ago when I first read this and it just got me again 😭😭

I notice the normalized disability rep and aro/ace coded main character this time around and appreciate the (even if it was unknown to me at the time) contribution to my bookish upbringing those years ago.

This novel is a successful blend of zombies, politics and blogging. There's just enough of each element to make it appeal to many different readers, some of which are not entirely comfortable with all three elements. I myself was not fully on board with the blogging side of the novel, but I was converted easily. 
Feed is one of the best books I've read, and it changed my outlook on life. Sure, it's a "zombie" book, but it's got depth. It's a book that shows true familial love, loyalty to one's beliefs, and what it means to be alive.

Mira Grant writes horror that chills my bones. I reread this series often but this first one is my favorite.

Feed was ... not at all what I expected! Yes, it's a novel that takes place in a world with zombies. But it's not quite a "zombie story". It's a story about politics and journalism, media frenzies and manipulation, with clever satire, elements of horror and sci fi, and great character development. 

It involves the undead, but that aspect is surprisingly well thought-out and believable. (It's life in a pandemic, which cuts a little too close to reality - and really you could replace the zombies in this novel with a number of life-threatening events that are have happened or are currently happening). 

The world building of the bloggers (the Newsies, Irwins, and Fictionals; the way they gained the trust of the public, etc.) was SO detailed and fun. The characters each had unique voices and quirks and levels of reliability.

And the tension building ... ooo. Every time they took one of those infection tests, I was SWEATING. And I never felt secure about the fate of our characters during scenes of intense zombie action, which I can appreciate. 

It's not a perfect book - I can see how our narrator Georgia might be grating (I found her endearing ... but also, who hates animals that much?), the brother/sister relationship was a little peculiar, and there are some sections that lag. But overall? It was fantastic.

Feed tells the story of three bloggers following a political campaign 26 years after a zombie plague spread through humanity.

In Feed, bloggers have largely filled in the space formerly taken up by mainstream news and entertainment. Georgia Mason is a "newsie" or reporter, while her brother Shaun is an "Irwin" or a person who pokes danger with a stick to see what happens. Their blog is chosen to follow a presidential run across a US still dealing with zombies shambling about.

Mira Grant, a pen name for Seanan McGuire, tells a story filled with equal parts hope and terror, where bad things happen to people who find themselves in the right place at the right time. Her prose is excellent and I really enjoyed the blog excerpts from the characters that open and close each chapter. I can't wait to read the next book.
