Read this book in one day. No explanation needed! Favorite one so far!

Taking this for what it is, which is a mystery with some forensics mixed in, it was okay.
It kept me guessing. One thing I guessed at pretty early on, some not until later and a couple I didn't figure out at all, I had them revealed to me.
It was not like the show. Tempe in the book is not at all like Tempe in the show. She has a sister for one. Her sister is fun, but a bit unbelievable. She's almost a caricature. She's larger than life, has like 7 ex-husbands, turns heads everywhere she goes, never listens to logic or sound advice.
Tempe is much less logical than in the show. In the show she is logical to a fault...it takes her ages to admit her feelings for Booth. Tempe in the book has an ex-husband, a daughter and constantly doubts herself where Ryan is involved.
I'm not really thrilled with how the relationship with Tempe and Ryan went. I don't want to give spoilers, but it just seemed like she was letting him take advantage of her and get away with being a douchebag.
It was a bit annoying when someone would be said in French, then translated to English. I understand where it would be necessary...but as I could read the French it was repetitious to me. I thought it was an odd decision to then leave the names of things in untranslated French. That was really a minor nitpick for me though, I can't really say it distracted me from the story.
Maybe it was my expectations from the show...maybe not. But Tempe just seemed a bit wishy washy and whiny. I also missed the interaction between her and her co-workers as you see on the show. In the book it was just her, the detectives, the coroner (her boss), and two experts she sent samples away to. Their interactions were limited to phone conversations exclusively about the evidence. There was no interaction within office, no compiling of evidence between many different team members to fit together like a puzzle.
Anyways, I like it alright as a mystery, but it wasn't really outstanding and it's not something that will stick with me or drastically change my POV on anything. It didn't really provide any insight into the human condition or anything.

I enjoyed this book a lot. The tie-in to Brennan's childhood kept me intrigued at where the mystery was going. As usual, Reichs has some great scientific detail, here about leprosy, which I enjoy. I'm looking forward to where Brennan's personal life is going in book 11. I feel like Brennan & Ryan are old friends who I'd like to sit down and have a drink with.

In Tempe's latest adventure, a set of bones may be her childhood friend's, who mysteriously disappeared. Ryan is trying to solve 6 possibly related cases - girls who are missing or bodies that have not been id'd. Great visit by Harry adds some to the story, but too much angst and not enough forensics. Ok overall. 091807

I bought this book on impulse because it cost RM15, very cheap, so I just grabbed it off the table. It's my first time reading Kathy Reichs, and I don't know why but I get this Sidney Sheldon-ish vibe when I read the book.

Needless to say, I enjoy all the mystery, crime-solving and forensic aspects of this book. I've always been a fan of CSI and that sort of TV shows, so reading about it is a new experience for me. I'll definitely be picking up more of Kathy Reichs after this.

It's Brennan vs. the pornographers!

Wonder of wonders, people are dead, people in danger, there's drinking in front of Brennan, and everything gets wrapped up & explained at the end. It's book 10 in the series & Reichs has hammered out a comfortable system of writing that works for her, and moderately so for me. They're mindless reads, but not so utterly mindless that I feel insulted. I love griping about these books, but I'm a bit busy right now for an in-depth dissection of irritations.

I remember reading the first book in this series when it came out several years ago and being totally enthralled. I stopped reading them around the end of season 1 (Bones, the TV show based on these novels) because the characters in the show didn't quite jive with my mental image from the books but the similarities were enough for me to feel displaced. Now, the characters are so different in my own mind that I thought I'd try to pick up the book series again. I'm glad I did.
