I decided to read the Temperance Brennan books after watching the television show Bones. The two are similar but also very different, I enjoy both. Kathy Reichs has a very detailed but still interesting writing style. I do not understand all of the technical jargon but that does not detract from my reading enjoyment. Tempe and Ryan are great characters and my favorite parts of the books are when they are in a scene together especially if it is out in "the field".
The twist(s) in this book were actually hidden very well and it was pleasing to discover information WITH Temperance rather than 4 chapters before her. The back of the book doesn't seem out of the ordinary but I've got to give a big pretty TRIGGER WARNING for this book. Most of it is a plot twist so I won't say what it is but it's pretty disturbing. I wouldn't have read this if I knew the turn it was going to take.

While some of the plot seems a bit implausible I always love this type of novel, I consider it to be a fun escape.
It was overall an easy read and quite intriguing. The main character, Temperance Brennan, is a forencis anthropologist and there are many many scientific references throughout the book. As I'm mainly not a science person, most of these details just sort of go over my head so whilst I appreciate the spin, I didn't really think it's necessary to go to that depth.
The book begins with a nostalgic rememberance of her childhood friend who suddenly left and would not reply to her letters. Certain circumstances triggered her to search for this missing friend whilst still working her cases. The end just seems a little bit convenient.
What I really like from this book in the series is her relationship with her sister, Harry. Which I don't think was prominent in the other books. Or at least Harry was merely passing by in the other books but here she's featured quite a bit. It made a welcome change.

This 10th novel in her Temperance Brennan series is much better than the last one, Break no Bones. Unlike Bones the TV show, the original Brennan is more integrated in the world, has an ex, a daughter, a sister, an off and on beau. This novel delves into Brennan's childhood and the disappearance of her best friend Évangéline when Brennan was 12. One of the major pecks for me reading Reichs is that her stories take place where I live. I know these locations, I can see the characters, hear the sounds of the story. The plot points are a bit gruesome, the science is fun, I got a bit annoyed with all the French/english translation but I can understand why it's there but I wish she would decided and just translate the titles and names. Her public is english speaking. The French translation will have the correct names and the original will be less awkward to read. The plot moves along at a good pace and the reader doesn't get bored. A good new chapter in the life of Temperance Brennan but still Reichs leaves us with some things unresolved to keep us interested and have us seek the next book.
While working in Quebec, Temperance comes across a skeleton that may be that of her best friend whom she hasn't seen since Temperance was 13 years old. Complicating the issue is her relationship with Andrew Ryan.
