I decided to read the Temperance Brennan books after watching the television show Bones. The two are similar but also very different, I enjoy both. Kathy Reichs has a very detailed but still interesting writing style. I do not understand all of the technical jargon but that does not detract from my reading enjoyment. Tempe and Ryan are great characters and my favorite parts of the books are when they are in a scene together especially if it is out in "the field".
After trying to my darnedest to find the first book, I apparently failed. I think if I'd read the first book in the series, a lot of my confusion would have been cleared up, but I do have to say that as a standalone book, it's not actually that confusing.
All that said, I thought this book was good. This is the first forensic anthropology/mystery novel I've read. I picked it up mostly because I love the TV show Bones and I know it's loosely based on these books.
The writing was strong, the pacing was solid, and I was intrigued by the mystery plot. I had to take 2 and a half hours out of my day to drive across the state and I spent most of the time wondering what was going to happen next in the book.

This was a fairly enjoyable addition to the series, but it failed to correct the flaw of the earlier books, and by #10, you'd think they would. Tempe throws herself needlessly into danger for the thrill of the chase. Again.
These books are fun. But they're pretty silly.
Also: The way Brennan questioned the victim seemed utterly lacking in compassion. This is a book about sex crimes, but the treatment is salacious. I shouldn't have expected better, but the treatment of most other topics is so much smarter.

Tempe in the books and Tempe in the tv series are so so far apart at this point. The series continues to be predictable, but still readable. It starts awkwardly as we race through into Tempe's troubled childhood at breakneck speed in order to introduce a character central to the mystery, and overall that A-plot felt very very forced.
