In Baptism of Fire, the plot takes a darker turn given that war has begun and the main characters scattered. This installment focuses heavily on Geralt and the fallout from events on Thanedd. By the end we learn more about elves and the possible manipulation of the prophecy to suit whoever can get Ciri.

Once again, the ability of Sapkowski to take known fantasy tropes and produce fresh insight is where this series shines. As well as the intrigue within intrigues. I’m already ready for reading this series knowing the ending. Hopefully it doesn’t fall flat.

Hard to start, I was not invested at first and it was a slog…but everything from ~pg150 onward was a delight and the ending, despite some tragedy, did get a laugh out of me.

An incredible fantasy book, a cream of the crop, bringing to mind the Fellowship's journey in Tolkien, the machinations of Aes Sedai in Robert Jordan, the cameraderie and wit of Terry Pratchett's heroes. All that with being a book of its own -- a fantasy pulp that might actually qualify as literature!
