There were several books in this one. Putting them all together in one didn't quite work for me, it seemed too manipulative. Whose child is he? Really? Really? Did you have to? I was perfectly happy following Masha's life, her following of Sally Red Shoes and burgeoning friendship with Kitty. That would have been a complete book there. Whole. But this second, incomplete, yet perfectly worthwhile book about Alice and Mattie, two characters we come to care about, gets smashed into it and is made to belong all along. Rendering all the heartbreak and growth Masha went through somewhat irrelevant. It quite spoiled it for me.

I loved this one.
It's a book about loss and how to deal with it, and I loved it.
I recommend it to all.

I had a hard time losing myself in the book and struggled to get through it. It might have been the cultural barrier as this is written with English shorthand and references. A truly heartbreaking plot.

Poignant, alarming, thought-provoking yet funny and laugh-out-loud at some points, with a conclusion at the end that I did not completely see coming, in the way it did.

I adored ‘The Keeper of Lost Things’ so was very excited to read this second novel by Ruth Hogan. I enjoyed this one almost as much. Much like ‘Lost Things’, it was well written with characters you really cared about. However, ‘Sally Red Shoes’ deals with a much more serious subject matter - death and mourning - and this made it a slightly harder read. Sally’s piece of wisdom that runs through the book is very profound though and touched me deeply. All in all, I enjoyed this book and would definitely recommend it - I just preferred ‘Lost Things’ more. I will definitely read more from Ruth Hogan in the future.

I picked up this book as i loved the cover, I’m as i think I’ve said before I’m a sucker for a beautiful cover! But this book is beautiful inside and out. We get two story’s running so we get chapters from Masha’s story and Alice’s story. The characters are well developed and it was until very near the end did i see the plot twist. The reason i haven’t given this five stars is because i wanted to find out a bit more of what and the how certain things happened at the end. I’m not going to say what as i don’t want to spoil it for others but all in all a life affirming book and i will most definitely read the others by this author as she has a lyrical and poetic way of writing and know hows to play with your heart. I would most definitely recommend this book.

Did not like this one nearly as well as her other book.
