I don't think I'd like Augusten Burroughs as a person. We have very little in common. However, he's a really great writer, and this is a fascinating and even touching story. I am glad I heard it in his own voice. I liked it better than Running with Scissors, although I understand this story better because I've read (listened to) that one as well. Burroughs is an author I don't seek out, but if he's in the library and I'm out of audiobooks, I'll always give him a listen.
Amazing. The only other book I'd read of his before this was Running with Scissors and this was much better. RWS felt like it wasn't real, even though I don't doubt that his story was true. This book actually made me cry. So good.
i read this book years ago but still sometimes think about it. i'm currently reading "a million little pieces" by james frey, but my mind just keeps going back to this augusten burroughs book, which i found more engaging a read. the scene in which augusten examines his apartment and takes out the many bags of trash just blew my mind. it's a reality check not often disclosed in anecdotes of recovery from substance abuse.
