We Could Be Heroes

I loved this book! This is the second book I've read in the last few months that featured drag queens, and that is so apt right now in the midst of all the hate out there in the world. Drag queens represent a joyful defiance, being oneself fully and courageously. I like the way the author juxtaposes the drag queens (the true heroes) with the superhero character that the MC plays. I also loved the backstory of the creation of the original comic set in McCarthy Era America. That was a brilliant move and having that story and the original comic stories interwoven with the present said something quite profound and sad about how little things have actually changed. I will absolutely be looking for more from this author! I highly recommend this to readers of LGBTQIA+ romance!

Thanks so much to NetGalley and the publisher for this ARC!

Yes Queen!
I've come to the realisation that romance novels aren't half bad... if they are gay.
I loved all the characters, I enjoyed their stories and development, and the ending was super cute.
The side plot of the creation of Captain Kismet was beautiful and bittersweet but it made a nice parallel (along with Captain Kismet's fictional story) to our main pairing.
I find myself wanting to read more books like this now.

First of all, thank you to Putnam Books and NetGalley for the ARC to this cute “superhero” story. While it did take a couple of chapters to get used to the writing style, I did end up really enjoying this book. The characters and story line were great and I loved the added story line that was placed throughout, though I wish that had been a bit more dramatic ending. Overall, a great story and nice read.

I had read real fun reading this, guys. I personally loved Will (and Grace Anatomy) so much. His relationship with Patrick is so wholesome and MAYBE the fact that I read two books in a row where the characters got together in the first 20% of the story is affecting me, because the first half of this was like HEAVEN to me. It was so respectful and well-written.
There's a fight that comes out of left field in the second half of the book that leads to an upsetting third-act break-up, though. Not really a fan of that, but whatever. Also, the side characters can be... very annoying, and the plot is a bit clunky, but I still had a damn good time :3

“Uproarious and touching, ‘We Could Be Heroes’ is an ode to queer joy and a romance that just might save the world.”

I received an ARC of ‘We Could Be Heroes’ almost a year ago, and I can’t believe I waited so long to read it—I completely forgot about my NetGalley account. I'm so glad I finally picked it up because I really enjoyed it. With a similar energy to that of ‘Heartstopper’, the relationship between Will and Patrick is both funny and beautiful. Their journey is one of self-acceptance and prioritizing your own feelings over the opinions of others. It’s cheesy in the best way, and I could definitely see this making a heartfelt movie.

Actor falls in love with a drag queen, who wouldn't love this. That is what drew me to the book.
I liked Will an up and coming Drag Queen straight from the start. Will's sassiness had me laughing out loud, but he was endearing.
Patrick whilst a famous actor did not come across as one of those spoilt actors who demanded everything, but a person who when he found a friend, he kept them close to his heart and whilst I understand why he had to hide that he was gay, he shouldn't have had to. But slowly thanks to Will, Will's found family and Patrick's close work colleagues he could be himself.
This was a quick read that kept interested from page 1. I must admit I was a bit confused at the first time line swap as I was not expected it and I was too wrapped up with Will. Whist at first I thought the story about Charles and Iris wouldn't fit, I quickly changed my mind when more of their story was told.
However the very best thing about this book is that it is set in Birmingham, my excitement when I read place like Hurst street, the Floozie in the Jacuzzi and I have spent a many a time in the Village Inn with friends. As a Brummie living in Yorkshire I loved every minute of this and every time a place was mentioned I knew exactly where they were.
This is a book I will reread and it will be one I will keep recommending.

This was sweet.
