Very strange twisted love triangle. I was just trying to figure it all out first time through, I need to reread it.

This novel depicts a twisted love triangle, in which the young man Kōji finds himself between an older married couple. The novel is brief, and a sudden act of violence quickly alters the dynamic between the characters. This ultimately results in a story focused on guilt, repentance, and personal desire rather than a romantic or sensual drama.
The story is primarily told through Kōji’s point of view, and this fact clouds the narrative. Given the novel’s brevity, little space is given to explore the perspectives of other characters, and whole sections of the book deviate from the primary triangular relationship. While the novel does a good job of depicting the conflicting emotions within Kōji, I feel the story is hampered by its length, which does not allow the reader to care much for any of the characters.

This was beautifully written and disconcerting, but I just didn't feel... anything. The whole book felt like a series of disparate chapters lodged together. Based on the quality of writing alone, this won't be my last Mishima, but as my first, it was a mite disappointing.
