3 Begrudging Stars out of loyalty to KMM...
Wow. Many people have complained that for too long KMM focused the Fever series on Mac & Barrons. I was never one of those people.
I loved their story. But I also liked the introduction of Dani (even though at the time I was chomping at the bit to find out what was happening to Mac.) She grew on me, in all her quirkiness and seeing this world through a physically powerful, socially-sheltered teen - was pretty awesome. She was growing up in a ridiculously strange world with mad powers and a rough past. I knew that it was time to let M&B go into the background to bring Dani into fore, and see what happens with her (and Ryodan because RYODAN.) and I was looking forward to that...

But sweet Christ on a bicycle, I was SO BORED for the first 160 pages of High Voltage.
description
Maddeningly bored! To the point I was skimming ahead constantly looking to see when ANY other characters were showing up again because KMM leaves Dani alone to her own devices and it does NOT entertain. I even had to start specifically looking for other characters with dialogue. Because everyone kept getting mentioned in an angsty "I'm so lonely" sort of way, and I didn't care at all about what was happening until Ryodan came back.
I have never had this happen with a Fever book before!
My boredom began morphing, with a twist of nerd rage.

Oh sweet Christ on a unicycle now, because we're losing wheels - Dani doesn't change in two years. It was like the literary equivalent of watching paint dry.
TWO YEARS PASS.
Dani is lonely.
Dani is bored.
Dani has a mystery she can't solve for two whole years...
Dani makes stupid rookie mistakes that should've gotten her killed...
And Dani does the same damn thing Dani always does which is box up her feelings and not reach out to the people who she never stops thinking of as her closest friends - really, as her family - and everyone suffers for her inability to recognize her own feelings,
Spoiler no really, Ryodan spends 2 years locked in a basement since she won't come to him, and he knows if he stays around her any longer as she starts to fool around with guys after Dancer's death, he's just going to kill them. Because the tattoo that tracks Dani if she's ever lost again is the equivalent to an ownership stamp for his beast.
which she apparently can't do on her own.

It was pathetic how excited I was for a glimpse of
Spoiler Barrons. Because there is No Mac AT ALL. (Just a text she sends to Dani.) And the fact that his few pages of smoldering yearning for Mac (like Colonel Brandon levels of yearning) gave me more feels than when Dani & Ryodan get together the first time was super frustrating because Mac & Barrons were like a incendiary device
and shocking at how unsatisfying the eventual romance between Dani & Ryodan was for me. It felt like KMM was trying to outdo Mac & Barrons which just couldn't happen in the short amount of time she actually gave them, and the stresses they were met with for the last quarter of the book. There's no enjoyment, only angst about what if's and why didn't you's. Plus Ryodan's loyalty made Dani look terrible, and even then it was just overblown and not sexy.

description
Seriously, Ryodan how are you NOT being sexy right now? That seems more difficult than just being sexy?

That being said, the last quarter was the best part, even though it all happened too fast.
It's the only part I got a little bit of enjoyment out of, but thinking back on the rest of the series it's still a shock at how much I didn't enjoy what KMM had to offer.

Do we know if there's actually going to be a book 11? No.
Will I read it if it does come to be? Yes.
Because maybe with the two established Dani will grow up more, and heaven help us, we'll see Barrons & Mac for even just a quarter of a final chapter in the Fever series?

Better the second time around

A perfect fairy tale ending, with a very unfairy tale way of getting there. The only way it should be for the Mega.
adventurous challenging emotional tense medium-paced

Omg the development of the world in this book is amazing. The characters we know and love are slowly getting their happy endings. I can't wait to see what the next book holds!

I sat on this book for 2 years and finally went in and read it. For reference, I read the first 5 Fever books back to back when it was thought that it was a completed series. I adore Mac and Barrons. I hated both Ryodan and Dani. I was not a reader that hated Iced though. I would love to go back to read it again. As the series continued, I began to feel deflated a bit and let down by it. I especially feel there is inconsistency about the beast form between what happened at the end of Dreamfever with Barrons beast and how Ryodan can shift at will.

So essentially I went in with low expectations. There were not many scenes with Dani and Ryodan and there was a lot of time waiting for things to happen. I missed Mac but that is always my complaints about the newer books. This was a book about Dani’s evolution and was very Dani centric. She is not the Dani of the first 5 books or of Iced and not even of Feverborn. She has evolved and changed and grown. The ending was amazing. I am mostly satisfied at the moment.

The more I read about Dani, the more I love her as a character. I love her complexity. Which is funny because when I held the absolute opposite opinion of her in the beginning. I love this whole series and this latest installment definitely didn't disappoint.

3.5 stars rounded up to 4.
This book was ok, definitely not my favourite Karen Marie Moning book. The story in High Voltage was a 3 star to 3.5 star the whole way through, and then that ending hit and bam! It was enough to round it up to 4 stars. I really hope that we get more of Dani going forward, in super interested in what her life looks like after High Voltage.

Not what I expected or hoped for

I absolutely loved this book! Thanks, KMM, for giving us such an amazing world to enjoy. I can’t wait to see what happens next! 😍😍

Wow!

Could not put this book down.
