It was ok!
It had a lot of the same issues I had with one of the worst books I read this year, but I cared less about them here because there is something I can't put my finger on that I do just enjoy about the MC & authorial voice.
I will finish the series but I don't think it's going into my faves.

This book really comes into it's own. If anyone has trouble getting through the first book, they should definitely power through. A constantly captivating plot with fun surprises that are exciting and harrowing. An evil bastard as the main character who you nonetheless can't imagine not rooting for, and maybe he just isn't so evil after all. I really liked the ending, got super excited at some bits. ...the way the bad brother killed the good brother so casually. literally *never* saw that coming. magic is definitely there as a plot device but somehow i can't manage to begrudge it, it's done well, and so if feels natural. The whole dual plot as you slowly learn the past and the present, side-by-side, was very well done. exciting and interesting throughout.
Probably even more quoteable than the first book, lots of really nice turns of phrase: I wrote down a couple of them, but many wouldn't make sense out of context so I didn't bother. *talks about the beauty of the countryside before finding a tick* öh well. even eden had a snake problem" "reich couldn't make an omlette without wading thigh deep in the blood of chickens and wearing their entrails as a necklace." There is an absolutely excellent part about decapitation, too long to quote, it can be found at: 7:20 in the Joe Jameson version, if at 1x speed. It must be said that Jameson does some real magic with quotes that would otherwise seem try-hard or trite.

If you liked the first one, you'll probably like this one too. I enjoy Jorg as a character, even though I don't always feel like the endings feel as earned as I would like. Still fun to watch Jorg grow.

After reading the first one, this one is more of an actually believable fantasy story for sure. The ending is actually really worth the read if you enjoyed the first one.
I liked it more than the first book. It didn't seem as gritty as the first one. And I was used to how the story is told and it didn't bother me anymore. The worldbuilding was still really good.

This was a good continuation of the series. The book was much longer than the first, and I think the writing has improved.
The story was majorly non-linear, and kept jumping between the present day and four years earlier. These jumps, however, were not too frequent or jarring to break focus and interest in the story. The author connected the two timeframes well, and the story flowed well overall.
I liked Jorg's journey throughout the book; he felt more sketched out and mature than the one-dimensional sociopath he was in the first book. His humility and respect for his opponents greatly complemented his confidence in his skills and wit.
The setting as apost-apocalyptic imagination of Europe was hinted further here, through modern buildings and weapons, as well as futuristic "AI" to store our consciousness, etc , which was interesting.
There were a few instances where the story felt dragged, and I felt myself losing interest in the story. Even the writing style eventually became a bit monotonous, so I had to take a break in the middle before continuing.
Nevertheless, the story and conclusion were done well, and I am excited for the final instalment of the series.

3.5* Badly written, confusing, cringe. Love Jorg and that character development
