Jorg is not a good king, but they follow him like a moth to flames.
Although in Prince of Thorns he might seem like a little annoying prick that is ruthless and cruel but still wants daddy’s love, Jorg grows into a king who knows that he is nothing but a symbol to the people. He is still cruel, but manages to show that he is willing to accept Makin’s advice (even asks for it from time to time). His humanity and kindness are shown through Gog, which is incredibly understandable as he witnessed his brother’s murder and sees the lecrota as his little brother. Jorg is built for a bloody world, but in the end, his humanity emerges.
The four year time shift is my favorite element in the telling of the story. I praise Mark Lawrence for this aesthetic as it quick-ends the pace the events infold.
Makin and Red Kent are definitely my favorite characters. Makin is the father figure Jorg needs and Red Kent teaches him humility and bravery.
Sadly, the King of the Dead gave me a bit of Arthas vibes, with the dead rising and the isles, but I am still looking forward to reading more in this universe and see him on the Empire’s throne.

Why can I hate a character so much with his vulgar actions, behaviour, and outright cruelty, and yet, I can't get enough of him, and I want to give him a hug? Just when his behaviour absolutely makes you sick to the stomach and you almost want to throw the book out the window at ever feeling an ounce of sympathy for him in the first book. He then twists that 'sharp' in your gut when he shows his vulnerabilities and hurt, he is a boy, only a boy really.

And a monster.

The second book in The Broken Empire trilogy has not disappoint me. The story is still very bloody and makes you like people that you really shouldn’t, because they are very baaaad. But they are written sooo well. And also very funny and sassy and in general entertaining. But I need to warn people that may be triggered by violence against animals because there is a very graphic scene where a child is made to torture a dog and then that dog is burned alive. It’s also very detailed, including the sounds that it makes during the process. I was about to DNF this book because of it.

In this instalment we learn a little more of Jorg (and other characters), and we can see that he is not that bad (!?) as he himself thinks, as we can see him caring both about people he has know for some time and complete strangers, even though he tell himself he is helping them because of selfish reasons. And also he assumes his guilt for some horrible things he has done under the influence of magic, which is refreshing.

This book is also sad as there is high body count of the most likeable (good &/or innocent) characters and one made me cry a lot every time there was mention of his name after his death (and he is mentioned a lot as he is a major plot point in the climax).

Also, Miana is 12 and the biggest badass in this whole story, there I said it.
