second dnf of the week, kill me. this one was just very disjointed and very mind numbing

scandalous, light-hearted enough, perfectly paced novel with just the right amount of critic and indulgence

DNF at 63% because I just didn’t care anymore. So disjointed. Mostly very critical of these college girls for no reason… they’re just young. I don’t know what the author’s point was. A shame because I loved her novel Such a Fun Age.

3.5 stars

Recommended to me forever ago by Mer but finally got around to reading it. I wasn't a huge fan of Such a Fun Age so I was a little worried going into this (also the Goodreads controversy) but glad I stuck it out.

This is a super character driven book so you do have to be pretty patient with the beginning - it's pretty slow setting up the story. I also think it's pretty subtle in its delivery so the big climax of the story relies pretty heavily on the slow tensions that have been built up over the course of the book. It took me like 40% of the book to really get established and start to feel invested which is usually not a good sign and is why I couldn't rate it as high as I think the end warrants.

However, I thought the book was significantly better than Such a Fun Age in its social commentary, the former excessively holding your hand through basic concepts of racial discrimination while this one more subtly wove in race and class. I also liked how every character in this book is deeply flawed but in their pov it almost seems pretty reasonable until you see it all come crashing down in the end. I just wish she pulled this off a little more succinctly and given each character a little more dimension.
