Reid really nails the voice and tone of all characters and brillantly plays with the power dynamics around the intersection of race, gender, queerness and money. I just wish the storyline was a little more satisfying.

Okay, so for a campus novel this was actually quite deep. I really enjoyed the different characters and seeing the complicated ways they intertwined. I think Kiley Reid has a great way of analysing privilege and race as well as the different relationships (romantic, familial, collegial, friendship) between women. Best book I've read so far this year!

DID NOT FINISH: 71%

I’d like to try again, but I’ll need to read the book instead of the audiobook. The narrator didn’t change voices so it was extremely difficult to keep track of the multiple characters I was following. I liked the story tho, so I’ll definitely try again later!

This novel read more like loosely interwoven character sketches than something plot-driven. Not awful, but also fairly bland.

Honestly confused at the people who say this book didn’t have a plot. My stomach was clenched the whole time. Several times I had to toss the book away from me because I was reading a plot point that was either devastating or deeply anxiety-producing. It’s a special skill to be able to orchestrate multiple characters’ histories, flaws, and decisions culminating in a destructive end. It reminded me of Chad Harbach’s The Art of Fielding, but on a smaller scale. My heart is still broken about Kennedy, and Peyton??? Peyton infuriates me. I know she’s just a little weirdo, but I can’t stand when people lie in order stay out of “trouble.”

The one thing I had trouble digesting was Agatha’s Teen Vogue interviews. I balk at the idea that there is this group of intellectual elite in Agatha’s circle that would find Jenna‘s vapid or spoiled nature to be uniquely compelling or remarkable in anyway. I mean, this book was written in 2024. You can find any of any number of individuals saying the exact type of things Jenna says on TikTok at any given hour of the day. It just reeked of superiority on Reid’s part, but I won’t hold it against her.
