Easily one of the best books I've ever read. Simple, profound, beautifully dense. This book was a genuine joy to read and a work of art.

"An Apprenticeship or The Book of Pleasures" by Clarice Lispector is a book for romantics. Reading this felt like a spiritual experience, because I was completely lost in the beautiful sea of Clarice's prose. I didn't think this work would move so much, but it did. I don't even think I have enough words to describe how much I loved this book.

The story is told from the perspective of our main protagonist, Lori. Lori finds herself infatuated with a man named Ulisses, and a spark forms between the pair. This novel doesn't give us the details of their relationship from a conventional point of view, and instead youare only witnessing the two in the talking stages of a budding relationship. You see all the intimate details that stream through Lori's mind as she allows herself to experience her desire and passion. But those desires and passions don't extend to Ulisses, but to the whole world around her, and it's a beautiful work of art that's a reminder of what it actually means to love and be loved.

The writing took my breath away. The fluidity of her words and how thoughtfully crafted they are paragraph after paragraph makes the pieces all the more moving. I can compare reading this to looking at a work of art itself.

I love discovering new books and new authors who I know will be all time favorites, and I can happily say that this definitely applies to this work and to Clarice Lispector.

Lispector writes in such a way I yearn to be able to read it in her original language. She writes in a way worthy to change the way I view rating books—perhaps I’ve been too generous calling a book great when it can’t achieve in writing what Lispector did.
